You might not need to bow, but next time Alex appears in 1923, she’ll be bringing some royal vibes to the screen. In the season finale, a surprising revelation slipped through: Alex is actually the Countess of Sussex.

This twist came up during a tense moment when Spencer was being forced off an ocean liner. The Earl of Sussex doubted the legality of their marriage and refused to let Alex leave with Spencer.

For Spencer—and the audience—it was a jaw-dropping moment. Julia Schlaepfer, who plays Alex, shared that while her character isn’t based on a real person, there was an actual Alexandra, Countess of Sussex.

Creator Taylor Sheridan mentioned this during casting but emphasized that the show wasn’t aiming for historical accuracy.

Schlaepfer explained to TVLine that Alex didn’t hide her royal background; she simply didn’t think about it. ‘She forgets about being royalty because she doesn’t want that title,’ Schlaepfer said. Alex’s family had controlled her life, but once she met Spencer, she found her way out and left it all behind.

The actress admitted she got so into the role that she also forgot Alex’s royal status until the finale. Spencer, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to care much about his wife’s noble roots. Brandon Sklenar, who plays Spencer, said, ‘I don’t think he gives a s–t.

In the upcoming second season, which starts on February 23, Alex will remain focused on her new life with the Duttons. ‘She’s committed to this new family and proving her loyalty,’ Schlaepfer confirmed. As for whether the family is growing, Schlaepfer and Sklenar hinted at the possibility of Alex being pregnant.
