'3 Body Problem' Officially Renewed for a Second Season, Netflix Confirms!

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of this year was the sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. Adapted from the eponymous book series by Chinese author Liu Cixin, the series captured the attention of fans due to its complex story and great production, as well as the brilliantly written characters and casting choices. While a lot of fans thought it was complex and were somewhat confused by the differences between the series and the books, the series received positive reviews from critics and fans, so it was expected that Netflix would renew it for a second season. And that has just happened! We are happy to confirm that Netflix has officially renewed the 3 Body Problem for a second series!

The series has been officially summarized by Netflix as follows: “3 Body Problem explores how humanity chooses to respond to its gravest threat. Starting off during China’s Cultural Revolution in the ’60s, the series introduces Ye Wenjie (Zine Tseng and later Rosalind Chao), a young woman who’ll go on to make a fateful decision that reverberates across space and time into the present day. When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel, a tight-knit group of brilliant scientists known as the Oxford Five must join forces with an unflinching detective and a mysterious intelligence agency to save the world.

The series was created by the trio of David Benioff, D. B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, and it has been confirmed that the upcoming episodes will also be created, executive produced, and written by the returning trio of Benioff, Weiss, and Woo. The trio also commented on the renewal:

We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!

Peter Friedlander, Vice President, Scripted Series (US & Canada), Netflix, also added to the enthusiasm:

The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End. Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched by their amazing partnership — and, just like the fans, we can’t wait to see what they have in store.
