'A Simple Favor' Becomes a Proper Hit on Netflix as the Sequel Is Currently Being Filmed

If you remember six years ago, A Simple Favor became an unexpected sleeper hit, both among the audiences and among the critics. Paul Feig’s adaptation of the Darcey Bell novel starring Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively was a movie that surprised everyone, with the critics praising its many intriguing elements, while the audiences loved it. It also earned $97.6 million on a $20 million budget, becoming a sleeper hit at the 2018 box office. The movie has recently arrived on Netflix, and the streaming service has confirmed that it has become a proper hit for them, earning a Top 10 spot on the weekly ratings chart.

This is certainly great news for the movie, as the sequel is currently being filmed, having been postponed several times earlier, so the fact that the original is still in demand certainly helps the production and indicates that the sequel, if done right, might also be a proper hit once it is released.

Netflix rarely reveals all of its precise viewership numbers, but we can confirm that we have gotten a glimpse into this weeks ratings and that A Simple Favor is doing great. As reported by the streaming service, A Simple Favor was the eighth most-watched movie last week, which is great seeing how it is the movie’s first week on the service. With 6,300,000 views and 12,200,000 hours of viewing time, the movie managed to beat out Madam Web and Security, landing behind Ice Age: Collision Course; the panned Atlas was the most-watched movie of last week.

The fans definitely liked A Simple Favor, so they will be overjoyed to hear that the sequel is being filmed as we’re writing this. Production had originally been scheduled for 2023, but began in April 2024; a release date has not been given yet, but we suspect that it will be sometime in 2025, based on our assumptions.

As for the cast and crew, we know that Paul Feig is back to directing the movie from a script by Jessica Scharzer. Kendrick and Lively are back in their roles as they travel to the island of Capri, where they are faced with another mystery. As for the others, Henry Golding will reprise his role as Sean Townsend, as will Andrew Rannells as Darren, Bashir Salahuddin as Detective Summerville, Joshua Satine as Miles Smothers, Ian Ho as Nicholas “Nicky” Townsend-Nelson, and Kelly McCormack as Stacy. Newcomers will include Elena Sofia Ricci, Michele Morrone, Elizabeth Perkins, Alex Newell, Taylor Ortega, Lorenzo de Moor, Aparna Nancherla as a character named, Sona, and Allison Janney.
