A24’s Babygirl has crossed the $50 million mark at the global box office (which was previously reported as enough to break even), proving to be another strong performer for the studio. The film has earned $27.4 million in North America and another $22.6 million internationally, making it one of A24’s highest-grossing releases.

Directed by Halina Reijn, Babygirl stars Nicole Kidman as a high-powered CEO whose personal and professional life spiral out of control after an affair with a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The cast also includes Sophie Wilde and Antonio Banderas.

International audiences have embraced the film, with standout performances in several key markets. In Ukraine, Babygirl has become A24’s highest-grossing title ever, earning $685,000 across 190 screens. The Netherlands, where Reijn is from, has contributed $4.27 million. In the U.K., the film debuted with $1.3 million, ranking among the year’s biggest R-rated openings alongside Poor Things and Smile 2.

Scandinavian countries also saw impressive results, with Denmark leading the charge as Babygirl took the top spot during its opening week. The region has collectively brought in $2.1 million. Poland recorded the film as A24’s second-highest opening in the country, while Romania set a new record with $432,000.

Other notable markets include France ($1.54 million), Spain ($809,000), and the CIS region, where the film’s $672,000 debut outperformed similar titles like Anora and A Star Is Born. In Belgium and Luxembourg, Babygirl has held strong, finishing second in admissions for two weekends in a row with minimal audience drop-off.

Beyond box office numbers, Babygirl has sparked discussions worldwide. The film’s viral “milk scene” has captured attention in the U.S., and its use of George Michael’s Father Figure has reignited interest in the classic ’80s hit. Initially attracting an older female audience, Babygirl has since expanded its reach, with men now making up nearly half of its viewers.

In Spain, the newspaper El Pais highlighted conversations among women in their 50s and 60s about how the film portrays mature female sexuality. Mental health professionals in Ukraine and Denmark have even used Babygirl as a starting point for discussions on aging and desire.

With its $50 million haul, Babygirl joins the ranks of A24’s top-grossing films, a list that includes Everything Everywhere All at Once ($143.4 million), Civil War ($127.3 million), Talk to Me ($92.1 million), and Hereditary ($87.8 million).

The film’s success has been backed by strong reviews and festival recognition. Kidman won the Best Actress award at the Venice Film Festival, adding to the film’s critical acclaim.

Reijn, reflecting on the film’s impact, said, “Seeing how Babygirl has resonated with so many people fills me with gratitude and hope. My greatest wish is that it helps viewers feel less alone and more connected to each other. It’s humbling to witness the conversations it has sparked about shame and desire.” She added that a young woman in one country described Babygirl as more than just a movie, calling it a movement.

Babygirl premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2024 before heading to the Toronto International Film Festival. A24 then gave it a wide release on December 25, 2024.

At the box office, Babygirl had a modest debut in North America, opening to $4.4 million in its first weekend and a total of $7.3 million over the first five days. The film held strong in its second weekend, dropping only 0.5% and pulling in $4.5 million. Even with a gradual loss of theaters, it continued to perform steadily, earning $891,000 in its fifth weekend while playing on just 777 screens.

Critics have largely praised the film, with Babygirl holding a 77% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Metacritic score of 80. Reviews have singled out Kidman’s performance as a highlight, with some calling it one of her most daring roles in years.

Michelle Goldberg of The New York Times noted that the film explores themes of power and intimacy, while Deadline Hollywood’s Damon Wise praised Kidman’s ability to bring psychological depth to the character. BBC’s Nicholas Barber highlighted Reijn’s gritty, indie-style approach, which avoids Hollywood’s usual glossy treatment of similar stories.

Not all critics were entirely won over. The Guardian’s Xan Brooks felt that while the film was provocative, it still carried a sense of being too polished. On the other hand, Variety’s Owen Gleiberman described it as “a shrewdly honest and entertaining” take on an unconventional relationship, with Kidman delivering a fearless performance.

The film’s ability to stir conversation, challenge perspectives, and maintain strong momentum at the box office suggests it will remain a major topic in the coming weeks. If you’ve seen Babygirl, let us know your thoughts in the comments!
