Amazon Renews 'Mr. & Mrs. Smith' for Season 2, as Glover's and Erskine's Returns Remain Uncertain

After very positive reviews and a growing fanbase, Amazon’s reimagining Mr. & Mrs. Smith has officially been renewed for a second season at the streaming service, which is definitely great news. The first season ended on February¬†2,¬†2024, so this renewal is quite quick, as it came after just three and a half months (more or less). The series has been described as a reimaging of the 2005 film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but with a different take on the story and the whole concept. The first season starred Donald Glover and Maya Erskine as the titular married couple who lead very different lives in reality.

This is just one of the numerous news presented at Amazon’s inaugural meeting with Madison Avenue ad buyers Tuesday, but this is definitely one of the major scoops, although the event has been filled with some exciting reveals, which we have also reported on in our other articles, so be sure to check them out as well! But, getting back to this series…

The renewal is now official and we know that showrunner Francesca Sloane is coming back for the second season. Sloane wasn’t initially supposed to be one of the showrunners, alongside Glover, as the series was initially conceived by Glover and Fleabag favorite Phoebe Waller-Bridge, but the two stars disagreed on the way in which the series was supposed to go, so they parted ways. Glover remained as showrunner and main star, while Waller-Bridge’s role in the series was taken over by Maya Erskine, whereas Sloane entered as co-showrunner.

This is an important piece of information that we have for you in light of the fact that we don’t really have any casting news for the season. This means that it is currently unclear whether Glover and Erskine are coming back for the second season or not. It might be an omission by Amazon, a simple mistake, but it might also indicate that the show is going to take a different approach in the second season and that the series might be transitioning to an anthology format or something else, perhaps.

The chemistry between Glover and Erskine was great, so unless there were some issues between the cast and the production (although it doesn’t seem like Glover is exiting as the series’ co-showrunner) or a change in direction, we don’t see why the two stars would be replaced.

Be that as it may, there are going to be many updates about the series in the future, so be sure to keep following us, as we are – as we always do – going to bring you all the latest information about the series as soon as we can!
