The Fans Are (Re)Discovering a Thrilling Crime Series Starring Antony Star that ‘The Boys’ Fans Will Absolutely Love
You know when you love one actor’s movie or series, you’ll love another similar one? If you liked Inception, you’ll most likely like Shutter Island as well. If you loved Little Women, you’ll also probably like Brooklyn as well. The examples are numerous, and we have plenty to pick from, which is what this report is all about.
This one is going to be focused on Antony Starr, who is best known for playing Homelander in Amazon’s The Boys, but who also has another series that is similarly dark and disturbing, a series that you will most likely love, and a series that the fans are (re)discovering right now.
And while the series in question is not a superhero or a fantasy series – it is a crime drama – it is dark, at times disturbing, and it is very in line with The Boys in several aspects. Plus, there’s Antony Starr in another stellar performance, so we definitely wanted you to check it out.
The series in question is Banshee, which premiered on January 11, 2013, with a 10-episode first season. Two additional 10-episode seasons were produced in 2014 and 2015 respectively, with the series concluding on May 20, 2016, after an 8-episode fourth and final season. The series was a slow starter (the first season received a mediocre 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes) but has since become a cult classic whose other seasons received ratings of 94%, 100%, and 100%, respectively.
The series never became a mainstream hit, but it is truly a great series that fans of Antony Starr will enjoy. Cinemax, the series’ distributor, describes it as follows:
Banshee stars Antony Starr as Lucas Hood, an ex-con and master thief who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, Pennsylvania, where he continues his criminal activities, even as he’s hunted by the shadowy gangsters he betrayed years earlier.
The action drama charts the twists and turns that follow Hood, who improbably becomes sheriff of the rural, Amish-area town while searching for a woman he last saw 15 years ago when he gave himself up to the police to let her escape after a jewel heist. Living in Banshee under an assumed name, Carrie Hopewell (Ivana Milicevic) is now married to the local DA, has two children (one of whom may be Lucas’), and is trying desperately to keep a low profile – until Lucas arrives to shake up her world and rekindle old passions. Complicating matters is the fact that Banshee is riddled by corruption, with an Amish overlord, Kai Proctor (Ulrich Thomsen), brutally building a local empire of drugs, gambling, and graft.
