The Wheel of Time is quickly becoming one of the most popular series exclusively streaming on Amazon Prime. It is actually based on a book series written by Robert Jordan and follows the story of a group of powerful women capable of using magic. But while the show does indeed focus more on magic, it is not uncommon for fantasy series to have mythical creatures like dragons. So, are there dragons in The Wheel of Time?
There are no actual fire-breathing dragons in The Wheel of Time but there is something called the dragon in the story. Instead, the dragon in The Wheel of Time is a title that is given to the male champion of light that is reborn once only during an age to fight the Dark One.
So, while it might sound misleading for the “dragon” word to be used in The Wheel of Time, it is safe to say that there are no dragons in this series if that is what you are expecting from it. Then again, just because there aren’t any dragons, it doesn’t mean that the story isn’t any good. It is best for you to read more about how The Wheel of Time portrays the dragon so that you would understand completely what it is all about.
Are There Actual Dragons In The Wheel Of Time?
The Wheel of Time is quickly becoming one of the most popular series available for streaming right now. And that is not only because the book series is actually quite popular but also because the series adaptation is bringing back the fantasy vibes that we all loved when we were watching Game of Thrones a few years back.
Of course, being a fantasy series, The Wheel of Time has magical and mystical elements that make it as great as it is. But, other than magic, one of the things that we often see in many different fantasy series are mythical creatures. For example, dragons are quite common in the fantasy genre. So, are there dragons in The Wheel of Time?
To temper your expectations as early as now, we are telling you that there are no ACTUAL dragons in The Wheel of Time. What that basically means is that you shouldn’t expect the series to have any sort of fire-breathing dragon roaming the lands and terrorizing people and villages. And people don’t even talk about actual dragons in the story.
Instead, what The Wheel of Time has is someone who they call the Dragon, who is actually a powerful person and is considered the champion of the light. This is actually a historical person who once existed in the history of The Wheel of Time.
The Last Dragon was a person named Lews Therin Telamon, who was instrumental in a lot of different events in the history of the world and went on to defeat and seal the Dark One. And because reincarnation is a common topic in The Wheel of Time, the Dragon is someone who gets reincarnated as well, but his reincarnation happens only once an age.
Moreover, the Dragon is actually just someone who called himself that nickname because of how powerful of a channeler or magic-user he is. So, in a way, dragons do not exist in their true form in The Wheel of Time but the Dragon nickname has become synonymous with someone so powerful that he could actually be just as powerful as a real dragon. Then again, that person is human and is not a dragon.
In line with that, the major protagonist of the story is actually an Aes Sedai scholar (a member of a magical organization of women) named Moiraine, who is equipped with the ability to track down people who could potentially be the next Dragon.
Why Are There No Dragons In The Wheel Of Time?
In the entire story of The Wheel of Time, people hardly ever talk about the real dragons or whether or not they exist in the world or have existed at some point in history. Even the novels hardly talk about dragons, as people don’t even explain what a dragon is. This means that there is no clear reason why dragons do not exist in The Wheel of Time.
However, judging by the fact that they use the term “dragon” as a symbol for someone who is very powerful, it could be assumed that dragons once existed in the story’s universe. In fact, Lews Therin, the previous dragon, used a banner that shows an actual dragon, which is a creature described to have a serpentine figure with red and gold scales along its body and legs, and clawed feet.
As such, what we may be able to conclude is that there were once dragons in the universe where The Wheel of Time is set. However, they may have existed hundreds or even thousands of years prior to the setting of the story. It could be that they went extinct at one point in history due to various different reasons that we can only assume.
It would have been nice if the story had actual dragons in it. But not having real dragons doesn’t take away the fact that The Wheel of Time is a great series that you may want to watch on Amazon Prime. And if you don’t want to wait for the next episodes, it might be a good idea for you to read the books instead.
Who Is The Dragon In The Wheel Of Time Series?
