Are 'ThunderCats' Adam Wingard's Next Live-Action Project? Here's What The Director Says!

The ThunderCats are one of the most beloved 1980s animated series for many fans around the world and the series has become a proper cult classic among fans of 80s television. After the original series ended in 1988, there have been two animated revivals (in 2011 and 2020, both on Cartoon Network), but the original series still remains the best for many fans. In light of this, it shouldn’t really come as a surprise that the series has long been listed as a potential candidate for a live-action adaptation and as it seems now, the movie is still on track.

Plans for a live-action ThunderCats movie emerged as early as 2007 and as of 2024, the movie has yet to be produced, but Warner Bros. has seemingly been developing the project more actively since 2021, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard set to direct. In a recent interview with Collider, Wingard confirmed that ThunderCats could very well be his next project, which is certainly going to make fans happy.

Wingard will be co-writing the movie with Simon Barrett, and the director has confirmed that the two of them are actively working on a draft script for the movie, which he revealed would go back to the roots of the series:

“Well, I think you have to have a little bit of both. You gotta take it seriously. In the cartoon, even though it was definitely for kids, the characters were in a fair amount of danger. I’m definitely still scarred from that one episode where Lion-O’s getting wrapped up in the mummy, the rope, and he’s in the temple. That really messed me up as a kid. But yeah, I think any good adaptation these days is you’ve got to say as true to the source material as possible. That’s what people really want, and that’s sort of our goal. I mean, if you’re doing something that’s beyond being a kid’s cartoon, obviously you have to raise the stakes. So, yeah, it’s got a little bit of both of that.”

We also know that Roy Lee and Dan Lin will be producing the movie and that is, sadly, all that we have as of the time of writing. But still, seeing how Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is coming to theaters this week, and Wingard doesn’t have any scheduled projects that we know of, this is more than a welcome update for the upcoming movie and we’re hopeful that we will see it sooner rather than later. Of course, keep following us for all the latest updates on the ThunderCats live-action movie, and more.
