‘Astro Bot’ is Stealing the Spotlight with Record-Breaking Game of the Year Wins
Astro Bot has been a standout game from the very beginning. Some of us felt it the moment we saw the first trailer, while others were hooked the second they started playing. Fast forward to now, and this little platformer has been raking in Game of the Year awards at a pace no one saw coming.
A website that tracks GOTY awards reveals that Astro Bot has now claimed 104 awards. That’s more than any other platformer in history. While it doesn’t come close to dethroning Elden Ring’s all-time record, it comfortably beats the previous top platformer, It Takes Two, which earned 88 awards back in 2021.
Astro Bot’s success isn’t just a fluke of timing. Some of the best platformers in the past faced stiff competition from other genres. For example, Super Mario Odyssey won only 37 awards in 2017, largely because it had to compete with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Without BOTW, Odyssey might have claimed far more trophies and possibly rewritten history.
The GOTY tracking site used here only goes back to 2013, the year before Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards became official. Even though earlier years are being retroactively added, the chance of an older platformer surpassing Astro Bot seems slim. While games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 likely won their share of awards, there simply weren’t as many to win back then.
Astro Bot’s incredible run might not be over yet. With a few weeks of awards season left, it could add even more trophies to its shelf. It’s just 15 shy of catching up with Death Stranding’s 2019 tally. Whether it breaks that milestone or not, one thing’s for sure: this little bot has made gaming history.
