‘Baldur’s Gate 3’ Cracks Down on Console Mods with 100-Limit Rule

Larian Studios has placed a cap on mods in Baldur’s Gate 3 for consoles, limiting us to 100 mods per save. This decision is to prevent crashes and long loading times caused by using too many mods. Consoles struggle with handling large numbers of files compared to PCs, so the limit is meant to keep the game running smoothly.

If we try to load a save that uses more than 100 mods, the game will stop us and show a message explaining the restriction.

This affects cross-saves too. For those of us who play on both PC and console, we’ll need to disable some mods on PC to ensure our saves can transfer to the console. The limit applies only to the number of active mods per save, not to the total mods we might have downloaded.

Larian understands this can be frustrating, especially for those already using over 100 mods on their saves. They’ve said they’re working on a solution to help us recover affected saves. This might mean being able to deactivate some mods temporarily or another way to clean up our modded saves.

This restriction shows the challenges of balancing player freedom and technical limits on consoles. While PC players enjoy almost limitless modding, console players face stricter file-handling capacities. Larian’s goal seems to be ensuring the game remains stable without removing the option to mod entirely.

For now, the message is clear: keep mods under control if you’re playing on consoles. It’s a small adjustment to keep enjoying the game without crashes or delays. Larian is committed to finding fixes, but until then, mod responsibly and keep an eye on that limit to avoid issues.
