‘Bayonetta’s’ Big 15th Birthday Sparks Mystery Announcements
PlatinumGames is gearing up to celebrate Bayonetta’s 15th anniversary in 2025. The original game launched in Japan on October 29, 2009, for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and reached other regions in January 2010. Since then, the series has expanded with two sequels—Bayonetta 2 and Bayonetta 3—and a spin-off titled Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.
In a recent blog post, PlatinumGames expressed pride in Bayonetta’s legacy, stating: ‘In 2009, we were able to deliver a brand-new action experience with the release of Bayonetta, which is a title that we are still very proud of to this day.‘
They also announced plans for a ‘Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year,’ promising various announcements throughout the year. They advised us to monitor their social media channels and website for updates.
The future of the Bayonetta series appears promising, despite the departure of its creator, Hideki Kamiya, from PlatinumGames. Kamiya, who left to join Clovers and work on a recently announced Okami sequel, had previously stated in 2022 that he couldn’t ‘conceive the Bayonetta series ever ending.‘ His departure hasn’t dampened enthusiasm for the franchise.
Bayonetta 3, released in 2022, received positive reviews, holding an 85/100 rating on OpenCritic. It also achieved commercial success, ranking as the ninth-best-selling game of 2022. This success suggests that the series has a strong future ahead.
As we look forward to the 15th-anniversary celebrations, we can anticipate exciting developments and announcements from PlatinumGames. The studio’s commitment to the series and its history of delivering engaging action experiences indicate that the Bayonetta franchise will continue to evolve and captivate us in the years to come.
