Beau DeMayo Reveals He Was Planning a Dark and Gritty Future for ‘X-Men ’97’
Despite all the problems with the project and the changes it made to the canon of the series, X-Men ’97 was a big hit for Marvel; there are a number of factors that contributed to its success, but we won’t go into each one here.
For everyone who had watched the original series, the animated series brought back happy memories with its excellent plot and animation style, which was nearly identical to the original series.
Naturally, this explains Disney’s decision to renew the series, but as you are well aware, the show will not be produced by the same creative team that created Season 1.
Beau DeMayo, the showrunner and original creator of the reboot series, was fired – allegedly due to sexual misconduct – and he is now actively engaged in a feud against Disney.
In a recent exchange between fans on Twitter, Beau DeMayo revealed his original plans for a dark and gritty Season 3, claiming that his storyline was originally too dark for Disney and that they are aiming for a more kid-friendly show, which is contrary to what the media have been reporting recently.
To sum things up for you quickly, Beau DeMayo successfully revived the successful original X-Men animated series from the late 1990s. Although the series was adored by viewers, DeMayo was let go before the revival even debuted, purportedly because of inappropriate sexual behavior. Since then, DeMayo has been firing back at Disney, making up for a series of interesting stories.
But, what interests us in this article is the information DeMayo revealed in a recent Twitter exchange with fans. He answered some questions and openly revealed some interesting production details.
In this report, we are going to focus on those tweets in which DeMayo reveals his plans for Season 3 (and later) to be dark and gritty, claiming that Disney’s new version is going to be much lighter:
Actually, my version was dark and gritty. The exact opposite is happening. They wanted it to be more kid-friendly and focus “more on the school” when I wanted to take the X-Men into space and AoA. They’re doing damage control.

This is a lie. They felt my season 2 was too dark.

Apparently, a story about “fighting for a world that hates and fears you” should be lighter fare. I tried reminding them that the OG series succeeded because it didn’t pander to kids. I was ignored and undermined by this exec and director.

Also I was there and this lead to a massive split in creative when they blew up my five season plan with no notice due to politics

As you can see, the tweets are all over the place, but there is a lot of interesting information that we can take from them, which is certainly going to be interesting when the second season arrives, which is when we are going to be able to compare things properly.
