Beau DeMayo Reveals Plans for Onslaught and Age of Apocalypse for ‘X-Men ’97’
X-Men ’97 was a huge hit for Marvel despite all the issues with the project and the modifications it made to the canon of the series; there are a lot of elements that contributed to its popularity, but we won’t cover them individually here.
The superb plot and animation style of the animated series, which was almost exactly the same as the original series, brought back good memories for everyone who had seen the original series.
This, of course, explains Disney’s choice to renew the series, although, as you are aware, a different creative team will produce this one than the one that produced Season 1. The remake series’ original creator and showrunner, Beau DeMayo, was sacked, purportedly for engaging in sexual misconduct, and has since then been engaged in an online feud with Disney.
In a recent major exchange on Twitter, with the fans, of course, DeMayo revealed a lot of his plans for Seasons 2 and 3, as well as the future of the series. These plans involved one major character, as well as a very dark storyline, and if you want to know all the details, keep reading!
In a nutshell, Beau DeMayo brought the beloved original X-Men animated series from the late 1990s back to life. Viewers loved the show, but DeMayo was fired before the revival even aired, allegedly for inappropriate sexual behavior.
DeMayo has been feuding with Disney ever since, and we have reported on that more than once. But what interests us here is the series, not DeMayo’s feud with Disney.
Namely, we know that Disney kept most of DeMayo’s original Season 1 stories intact, but while DeMayo had finished Season 2 and almost Season 3 as well, Disney has been rewriting the second season, implying that DeMayo’s ideas won’t actually be making it into the final cut.
In light of that, in the above-mentioned exchange, DeMayo revealed some of his plans for the future, which would have involved the characters of Onslaught and Apocalypse:
Note specifically the moment when both are completely submerged by a raging wave of trauma water and we cut away

Remember how Xavier says to Magneto at the top of 10 how these waters represent the anger and pain you carried all these years. My idea was that Xavier was being infected all along in 10 via osmosis, and def when you see them pulled under.

My plan was all of Season 3 would be AoA. Just to clarify.

They’re rewriting the season because they blew up episode 10, which paid off a season-long mystery of clues and foreshadowing that lead to Onslaught. Once that was scrapped, Marvel kept pivoting on the story they wanted to tell and running the crew into the ground.

Yep, pretty sad. Season 2 is also only 9 episodes because of this and them canning my Onslaught/AoA finale. But Marvel loves shooting themselves in the foot, especially with certain directors and execs pushing their backwards “we know better than the comics” agenda. #xmen97

As you can see, the tweets are all over the place, but there is a lot of interesting information that we can take from them, which is certainly going to be interesting when the second season arrives, which is when we are going to be able to compare things properly.
