Beau DeMayo Confirms Marvel and Disney Are Significantly Changing His Plans for ‘X-Men ’97’ in Fan Exchange on Twitter
X-Men ’97 was a huge hit for Marvel, despite all the issues surrounding the project and the modifications it made to the series canon; there are several reasons that account for this success, but we aren’t going to analyze each of them individually here.
The animated series featured a fantastic plot, was animated in a style that was almost unaltered from the original series, and brought back fond memories for all those who had watched the original series.
This, of course, explains how and why Disney decided to renew the series, but as you probably know, the show will not feature the same creative team that made Season 1.
Beau DeMayo, the showrunner and original creator of the reboot series, was fired – allegedly due to sexual misconduct – and he is now actively engaged in a feud against Disney.
In a recent exchange between fans on Twitter, Beau DeMayo revealed how much Season 2 will be different from his original plans, seeing how Disney has hired people to rewrite DeMayo’s original scripts.
This is despite the fact that they had already been pitched at the time, with DeMayo working on Season 3. The exchange features a lot of interesting details, so be sure to keep reading!
Long story short, Beau DeMayo resurrected the original X-Men animated series from the late 90s, which proved to be a hit. But while the fans loved the series, DeMayo was fired before the reboot even premiered, supposedly due to sexually inappropriate behavior.
Since then, DeMayo has been firing at Disney, which is what he was able to do because the truth never came out. It’s been interesting since then, but we’re going to focus on the show here.
Namely, as it turns out, DeMayo had written all of Season 2 by the time he was fired and was almost done with Season 3. And while Disney retained most of DeMayo’s ideas for Season 1, it has been implied that the Season 2 scripts were heavily altered and that the series is going in a completely different direction.
In a recent exchange with fans on Twitter, DeMayo revealed some of the changes Disney that we can expect:
From what I’m hearing, the one director and exec who fought me and anyone else who loved the comics at every turn during season 1 has tossed most of what I had planned out 🤷♂️ At one point, the exec was pushing Emma and Logan being a couple 🙄

Oh trust me, the crew who were fans and myself were furious when a certain exec came in — after letting me write the script knowing they were going to can it — and said they “had cooled on the idea” and I was being “too ambitious.” Same exec who gave the “less gay” notes.

Yeah, sorry guys. But when Marvel protects a director who openly discriminates against anyone who isn’t like them, writes off Claremont as a old white man who’s stories we shouldn’t be adapting and instead do “our own versions,” what do you expect…

Season 2 was written in 2022 and 2023. Animatics were in full review and episodes were being shipped. Animation has a long lead time. I was turning in the Bible for Season 3 in March when we parted.

As you can see, the tweets are all over the place, but there is a lot of interesting information that we can take from them, which is certainly going to be interesting when the second season arrives, which is when we are going to be able to compare things properly.
