Ben Schwartz Drops a Big Hint About ‘Sonic’ and ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Movie

Ben Schwartz, who voices Sonic in the successful ‘Sonic the Hedgehog‘ film series, recently shared his enthusiasm for a potential ‘Super Smash Bros.’ movie. In an interview with Variety, Schwartz expressed his admiration for Chris Pratt’s portrayal of Mario and the idea of bringing various video game characters together on the big screen.

Schwartz mentioned that while a ‘Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games’ crossover would be enjoyable, he envisions something more ambitious. He said, ‘What I really think could be bananas is if we get a “Super Smash Bros.” spinoff.‘ However, he acknowledged the challenges, noting that it would require collaboration among multiple studios.

The actor emphasized his excitement about expanding the Sonic franchise, stating, ‘The idea that we get to build our own franchise that lives on its own… that’s what I’m concentrating on, and that’s what I love.’ He also expressed interest in exploring more characters and stories within the Sonic universe in future sequels.

The success of ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ in 2022 and the positive reception of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3′ have demonstrated audiences’ appreciation for films that embrace their video game origins. Despite this, a ‘Super Smash Bros.’ movie would face significant logistical hurdles.

Different studios hold the rights to various characters: Warner Bros. has Pokémon, Universal has Mario, and Sony is working on a live-action ‘Legend of Zelda’ movie. Coordinating among these companies would be complex.

Schwartz remains hopeful, pointing out that with existing films like ‘Detective Pikachu’ and upcoming projects such as the ‘Legend of Zelda’ movie, the possibility of a crossover is becoming more feasible. He said, ‘If you can get all these studios that often compete with each other to make the same movie and somehow split the profits, that would be wonderful.

While a ‘Super Smash Bros.’ movie is an exciting prospect for video game enthusiasts, it would require unprecedented collaboration in the film industry. For now, Schwartz and the creative team behind the Sonic films are focused on developing their own franchise, with hopes of exploring new characters and storylines in future installments.
