‘Bioshock Infinite’s’ Ken Levine Opens Up About Irrational Games’ Sudden Shutdown
Ken Levine, the creative force behind BioShock Infinite, recently shared insights into the closure of Irrational Games following the game’s release. Despite the game’s success, the studio’s journey was fraught with challenges.
Developing BioShock Infinite was a monumental task. The team expanded significantly, increasing the complexity of the project. Levine admitted that managing a larger team was overwhelming, especially without prior experience in such a role.
He said, ‘You’re this creative person and, all of a sudden, as your vision increases of what you want to do, you have to become a manager in a way that you don’t necessarily have any training or skill in.’
During this period, Levine faced personal hardships, including the loss of both parents. These events took a toll on his mental health, making it difficult to lead effectively. He reflected, ‘I couldn’t do it any more, and I didn’t think I had the team’s confidence.’
After BioShock Infinite launched, Levine sought a change. He wanted to work on smaller projects with a tight-knit team. He approached Take-Two, the parent company, with the idea of starting anew while hoping Irrational Games would continue without him. However, Take-Two decided to close the studio. Levine noted, ‘The decision was made at a corporate level that they didn’t think they should continue with the studio as a going concern.’
Levine believed that keeping Irrational Games operational could have been beneficial. He suggested that the team could have worked on projects like a BioShock remaster to rebuild confidence and establish new leadership. He stated, ‘I thought they were going to continue. But it wasn’t my company–I sold it, so I worked for Take-Two, and the studio was theirs.’
Following the closure, Levine formed Ghost Story Games with a small group from the original team. They have been developing a new game titled Judas. As of now, there is no official release date, but Take-Two’s financial reports indicate an expected launch by March 2025.
The transition from Irrational Games to Ghost Story Games marked a significant shift in Levine’s approach to game development. Focusing on smaller-scale projects allowed for a more manageable and creative process. This change aimed to reduce the pressures experienced during the development of large-scale games like BioShock Infinite.
In summary, the closure of Irrational Games was influenced by the challenges of managing a large team, the personal struggles faced by Levine, and corporate decisions by Take-Two. Despite the end of the studio, Levine and his team continue to contribute to the gaming industry through new ventures.
