Stephen Graham and Malachi Kirby are gearing up for battle in the gripping trailer for A Thousand Blows, a bare-knuckle boxing drama set to premiere on Disney+ and Hulu. The show, launching on February 21, plunges us into the gritty world of 1880s East London, where everyone has to learn how to fight, no matter where they come from.

Graham’s character, Sugar Goodson, sets the tone with his ominous words: ‘You learn to fight.’ The story follows Hezekiah Moscow, played by Malachi Kirby, and Alec Munroe, portrayed by Francis Lovehall.

These two best friends from Jamaica find themselves thrown into the dangerous arena of illegal boxing. Hezekiah soon catches the attention of Mary Carr, known as the Queen of the Forty Elephants and played by Erin Doherty. She aims to use Hezekiah’s skills for her own criminal gain.

Meanwhile, Sugar Goodson, the self-proclaimed emperor of the East End boxing scene, views Hezekiah as a threat. As tension rises, Sugar declares war, determined to eliminate his new rival.

The trailer features a heated exchange, with Alex telling Hezekiah, ‘You can be the next champion,’ while Sugar ominously warns Mary, ‘I want him off my patch.’ This leads to a fierce showdown, with fists flying and Aitch and ArrDee’s song ‘War’ playing in the background.

The series is the brainchild of Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who not only wrote the script but also serves as an executive producer.

The six-part show is produced by Graham and Hannah Walters’ Matriarch Productions, alongside The Story Collective and Water & Power Productions. The executive production team includes Damian Keogh, Kate Lewis, Tom Miller, Sameer, David Olusoga, and Lee Mason.

The show’s writing team features Ameir Brown, Insook Chappell, Harlan Davies, and Yasmin Joseph, while Tinge Krishnan, Nick Murphy, Ashley Walters, and Coky Giedroyc take on directing duties and also serve as executive producers. The producers for the series are Tom Miller, Barrington Robinson, and Jo Johnson.

With its intense action and compelling characters, A Thousand Blows promises to be a knockout hit.
