Cities: Skylines 2’s console release remains uncertain as developer Colossal Order grapples with performance challenges on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. Initially set to launch alongside the PC version in October 2023, the console editions faced delays due to unmet quality standards. The PC release proceeded but was criticized for performance issues.
In a recent update, Colossal Order attributed the ongoing console delays to ‘hardware limitations.’ The team highlighted difficulties with both CPU and GPU performance, especially when players engage in actions that cause frame rate drops or memory overload.
For example, placing large buildings overwhelms the system during calculations, leading to noticeable slowdowns.
To address these issues, the developers have managed to achieve a stable and playable state on consoles by significantly lowering graphics quality. However, they are unwilling to compromise to such an extent. Their current focus is on enhancing graphics to an acceptable level, followed by further optimizations in simulation and memory usage.
Despite these efforts, Colossal Order cannot provide a release estimate for the console versions, aiming to avoid premature or misleading information. They emphasize that the console release remains a top priority, with multiple solutions being explored and experts actively involved.
This situation follows a series of challenges for Cities: Skylines 2, including a problematic PC launch and delayed or canceled content. Colossal Order’s commitment to resolving these issues reflects their dedication to delivering a quality experience across all platforms.
