J.K. Rowling is an author who has made several generations happy with her Harry Potter series, which was later adapted into a successful movie series. A TV series adaptation is on the way, but while the series itself is still one of the most beloved ones, the author has been a topic of debate for several years now due to her views on the transgender community and their issues.

We had recently reported how the number of people she fought with over her views increased, and how even the Harry Potter stars who worked on the movies rejected her views, but some people have decided to go even further, as a play about Rowling’s views is in the works.

Namely, the upcoming Edinburgh Fringe Festival is going to host the already-controversial play TERF, which will see fictional versions of the Harry Potter film series stars stage an intervention for Rowling over her views, and it seems that the organizers are already preparing for protests!

Namely, the play TERF – an acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist – premieres next month in Edinburgh, and due to the fact that it is going to discuss a very sensitive topic, its Edinburgh-based producer, Barry Church-Woods, is already preparing for major protests:

“We expect that most people, if they’re intending on disrupting what we’re doing, that will happen in the auditorium of the theatre. We have processes in place that are going to deal with that.”

In case you are not acquainted with the play, it is a piece written by Joshua Kaplan, and will see the three main Harry Potter stars – Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint (played by Piers MacKenzie. Trelawny Kean, and Tom Longmire respectively) – stage an intervention for J.K. Rowling, who will be played by Laura Kay Bailey, a Texan actor 15 years younger than the writer. The three of them will challenge her views that trans women are not women, among others, and discuss the issues with her. A trans actor will also feature in the play, but their identity is being hidden to avoid potential attacks on them.

Kaplan has, though, denied that this is just a play written to attack Rowling and that she won’t be portrayed as a stereotypical “pantomime villain”, saying that he was inspired to write the piece by both Rowling’s comments and her ongoing feud with trans woman India Willoughby, which has been going on for a while now:

“It’s not just about what we say, it’s about the way we say it. A lot of that interrogation [about] how we communicate with each other has been completely lost when we are sitting behind our computer [and] typing these awful, often terrible things out to each other and not stopping and thinking about [the] people on the other side of the computer.”

The play is definitely going to cause a lot of controversy and we doubt that Rowling will simply ignore it, which is why you can expect more reports on it next month. On the other hand, Kaplan has also said that all of them would welcome both Rowling and Willoughby to the play, but we don’t think that is going to happen, at least not that both of them will be there at the same time.

Be that as it may, we’re looking at a potentially hot topic, so be sure to keep following us for all the updates!
