The UEFA Euro 2024 is currently on the way, and if you’re a fan of the sport (as yours truly is), you’ll probably know that Portugal went through to the quarter-finals after a dramatic and not completely justified penalty win over Slovenia. And while we’ll talk about everything later, the focus of this post is going to be Portugal’s main player, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is a sports icon, and while his career is approaching its well-deserved end (he is 39 years old), he is still an important player and has a lot of influence. This was seen in the game against Slovenia, where Ronaldo’s ego might have gone a bit too far.

After his Last 16 performance against Slovenia, Ronaldo has been compared to The Boys villain Homelander due to his reactions and his behavior on and off the field. The memes are pouring in, and we can actually confirm that there is a basis for this type of satire, which The Boys would definitely be proud of.

So, what happened? Portugal won Group F with 6 points and was drawn with Slovenia, who, with three draws out of three games, managed to go through Group C for the first time in their history. Portugal was the outright favorite in this match, but Slovenia was well-organized in defense, and they even had two 100%-chances they managed to miss, which would have seen them go through the quarter-finals.

Slovenia ultimately lost on penalties (3:0) and while they were sad, they really can be proud because of their performance against a top-tier team like Portugal. Slovenia’s boldness is one of the biggest talking points of this match, but the second-biggest is Cristiano Ronaldo.

The superstar is desperately trying to score a goal on this tournament and while he has not had any success up to this point, that did not stop him from trying. He took a total of three free kicks in the game, missing all three of them, and even a penalty that Slovenia’s goalie, Jan Oblak (one of the best goalkeepers at the moment), managed to save.

His desperate attempts, all of which had been made at the expense of his teammates (most notably Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva, both world-class players), reminded fans of Homelander.

Like Homelander, Ronaldo doesn’t seem to think that it will ever be his time to retire. Despite all the objective parameters pointing to the fact that he is not as good as he was in his prime, he still takes on the main role and seemingly doesn’t allow other players to shine or take on a bigger role. His behavior and his reactions are a lot like Homelander’s, who also thinks that whether he does good or bad, he is still the best and that everyone should laud him like a god.

As we’ve said, a lot of memes were created to compare the two of them, and here is a gallery of the best ones (and yes, they’re really good):

One fan even made an effort to make a deep fake video, which is also great:

And while this satire is definitely exaggerated, all fans of the sport know that they are not far from the truth and that a little bit of humility in Ronaldo’s case might lead him and the team very far.
