Danny Trejo in The Book of Boba Fett Episode 3: Who Is the Rancor Trainer?

The Book of Boba Fett and almost all of the Star Wars shows on Disney+ are great at giving out cameo appearances from notable Star Wars characters and even popular actors. This trend continued in The Book of Boba Fett, which continues to introduce one new character after another. And the latest addition to the series got fans excited, as we got to see Danny Trejo. But what does Danny Trejo do in The Book of Boba Fett?

Danny Trejo plays the role of a Rancor trainer. He was introduced to the series when the Hutt Twins made the mistake of having Black Krrsantan attack Boba Fett in his sleep. Before leaving Tatooine, the Twins gave Fett a parting fit in the form of a Rancor calf and its trainer played by Danny Trejo.

As surprising as Danny Trejo’s appearance in the show is, some fans already predicted this to happen because of filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who is one of the show’s producers. It is almost certain that Trejo is around when Rodriguez is working behind the scenes for a film. But while some fans already predicted Danny Trejo to make an appearance, no one thought that he would be a Rancor trainer.

Who Is Danny Trejo Playing In The Book Of Boba Fett Episode 3?

The entire galaxy of Star Wars is so huge and vast that it can be full of different characters who can always play any kind of role imaginable. That said, the Star Wars shows on Disney+ prove how vast the universe is, as the shows continue to introduce new characters from one episode to another. This was something we saw in The Mandalorian, which gave us plenty of fanservice in the form of cameo appearances from notable actors and notable Star Wars personalities.

Given that The Book of Boba Fett follows the same formula that was successful with The Mandalorian, it is not a surprise that we have been seeing new characters making appearances in the show one episode at a time. Of course, we can also thank Disney’s massive budget for its Star Wars shows for that.

Of course, when episode 3 of The Book of Boba Fett became available for streaming, there were fans who were surprised to see Danny Trejo making an appearance. Then again, some fans weren’t surprised.

When it was revealed that Robert Rodriguez is one of the executive producers for the show, fans were quick to point out that Danny Trejo, the legendary Machete star, was probably going to make an appearance. That’s because Rodriguez and Trejo are almost always working together on films. Whenever Rodriguez is making films, he almost always pulls Trejo along. But what exactly is Danny Trejo’s role in The Book of Boba Fett?

Who Is Danny Trejo Playing In The Book Of Boba Fett Episode 3?

If you remember, in episode 2, Fennec Shand, in an attempt to extract information from the assassin from the Order of the Night Wind, trapped him in the Rancor pit. The fear of getting eaten by the Rancor forced the assassin to squeal for his life, only to find out that the Rancor cage was empty. You can thank Luke Skywalker in Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi for that.

Moving forward, in episode 3, a sleeping Boba Fett got attacked by the black Wookiee Black Krrsantan, who was now working for the Hutt Twins, who are also Jabba’s cousins, as the slugs were looking to take over Fett’s role as the new daimyo of Tatooine. If you remember, the Twins told Fett back in episode 2 to sleep lightly as a warning for what was to happen in this scene.

Not wearing his armor and having just awoken from his bacta tank, Boba Fett was no match for the strength and ferocity of the Wookiee gladiator, as Black Krrsantan nearly killed the bounty hunter in a bearhug. It was only through the help of Drash’s gang, Fett’s new henchmen, the Gamorrean guards, and Fennec Shand that the Wookiee was defeated and got trapped in the Rancor pit.

Shortly after Krrsantan’s capture, the Twins arrived at Boba’s palace to tell him that they were going to renounce their claim to Jabba’s estate because Mayor Mok Shaiz had already promised it to another syndicate. As a token of their apology for sending the Wookiee to kill him, the Twins offered Boba Fett a Rancor calf and its trainer, who happened to be played by Danny Trejo.

Danny Trejo’s character never introduced or shared anything about himself. The only thing that we know about him is that he specifically saved the Rancor, which was bred from a champion line, to train it. So, in short, Trejo is but a Rancor trainer, as far as this episode is concerned.

What Is A Rancor?

Now that we have talked about Danny Trejo’s role as a Rancor trainer, you might be wondering what a Rancor is. Basically speaking, Rancors are large semi-sentient reptilian creatures that are native to the planet of Dathomir, the same planet that Darth Maul and his kind came from.

This is not the first time we see a Rancor, as this creature was introduced to us back in Episode VI when Luke Skywalker had to fight a Rancor in Jabba’s dungeon. Needless to say, Luke killed the Rancor, and that is why the Rancor cage in Boba’s palace became empty before the new Rancor arrived.

While we have already seen a Rancor in the past, The Book of Boba Fett, through Danny Trejo’s character, allowed us to understand these creatures more. Trejo said that Rancors are emotional creatures that will form a bond with the first person that they see. That is why the Rancor calf given to Fett wore blinders, as the intention was to imprint it on the legendary bounty hunter and allow it to form a bond with its new master.

Are Rancors Really Like Pitt Bulls Of Star Wars?

Based on what Danny Trejo’s character said about Rancors, it is easy to conclude that these creatures are not as ferocious as they may seem. They are highly emotional and intelligent creatures that form bonds with people.

So, in a way, Rancors are just as misunderstood as the Pit Bulls we have in today’s world. Pit Bulls, which are often used in underground dog fights, might be ferocious fighters, but they are very emotional and sweet towards the people they trust. And like Rancors, Pit Bulls will only attack when they feel threatened.

What Is The Job Of Rancor Trainer?

As mentioned, the Rancor that the Twins gave to Boba Fett imprinted on the bounty hunter and recognized him as its new master. So, if Fett is the Rancor’s master, what is the role of Danny Trejo’s character?

Basically, Danny Trejo serves as the trainer and caretaker of the Rancor. He isn’t its master, per se, but he is tasked to take care of it and look after its needs, similar to how zoo animals have their own caretakers. We have seen this role before in Return of the Jedi when we saw one of Jabba the Hutt’s henchmen having an emotional breakdown after Luke killed the Rancor.

Will Danny Trejo Have A Bigger Role In Upcoming Episodes?

One of the things that Boba Fett told Danny Trejo in episode 3 of The Book of Boba Fett was that he wanted to learn how to ride the Rancor. This came after Trejo’s character said that the witches of Dathomir used to ride the Rancors on their home planet.

Given the fact that Fett is looking to learn how to ride a Rancor, it goes without saying that Danny Trejo’s character will have a bigger role in the upcoming episodes, as he might very well be the one to teach the bounty hunter how to ride the beast.
