These days, crafting a standalone Marvel story feels almost impossible, especially with every project tied into the bigger MCU web. Daredevil: Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane knows this all too well. While planning the Disney+ series, he quickly learned how the MCU’s larger plans could limit creative freedom.

In an interview with SFX magazine, Scardapane explained that while he had creative flexibility early on, some ideas had to be reworked because they clashed with Marvel’s grand strategy.

He noted, ‘Marvel has a master plan, and what you’re doing causes ripple effects.’ He added that some moments from Matt Murdock’s past appearances, like his one-night stand with She-Hulk, won’t be part of this story:

I have plenty of leeway up until I hit the larger-scale plan for the MCU. So I try to ignore some stuff [from the wider universe]. We establish a very specific Daredevil, both in terms of his dilemma, down to the suit and where we’re picking him up in his life. You can say that Daredevil is canon in the MCU, those other events [in Spider-Man and She-Hulk] happened, but some of them we are not leaning into. His one-night stand with She-Hulk may be one of those things.

The show picks up with a retired Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) stepping back into his Daredevil role as Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) wreaks havoc in Hell’s Kitchen again. Fans can expect to see returning characters Karen Page, Foggy Nelson, and Frank Castle, played by Deborah Ann Woll, Elden Henson, and Jon Bernthal.

Scardapane also teased a surprise character appearing in the series, someone viewers wouldn’t expect but who fits naturally into the story. While it’s clear the show connects to the MCU, Daredevil: Born Again aims to focus more on Matt’s personal journey and less on other Marvel events.
