Dark Horse Comics Will Star a Gripping New Vampire Story in 'Vatican City'

Vampires have taken over the world, wiping out every living person. The only survivors? A small group of tourists holed up inside Vatican City. The clock is ticking as they try to hold on while millions of vampires gather outside. How long can they survive?

This is the premise of Vatican City, a new comic series from Dark Horse Comics. It’s written by Mark Millar, known for his work on The Magic Order, and features art, colors, and covers by Per Berg.

This is a unique take on the classic vampire genre, bringing survival horror to the world’s smallest country. With two variant covers by John McCrea and Per Berg, there’s a lot to look forward to for collectors as well.

Millar has been sitting on this idea for years, as he revealed:

I’ve had this idea for years, Assault on Precinct 13 with vampires, tourists and staff safe behind the holy relics in The Vatican while the rest of the world outside has been taken down by the forces of darkness. I wrote it into The Magic Order as a little subplot in volume 3, but really wanted to flesh it out and tell the whole story.

Vatican City is my big chance. Most exciting of all for me is getting to work with Per Berg. I’ve admired his work for two or three years now and have been itching to get together with him on a project, but this has just surpassed all expectations. It’s the maddest thing I’ve ever written. You’re going to love it.

The comic focuses on the struggle of the survivors inside Vatican City. As vampires surround the walls, the clock is ticking.

The survivors’ only hope is to stay hidden long enough for help to arrive, but how long can they hold out against an endless horde of vampires? The creatures outside have all the time in the world, while the humans inside are running out of resources and patience.

The artwork by Per Berg is a standout feature of the series. Millar has expressed his excitement about collaborating with Berg, calling it the best thing he’s worked on so far. If you know Berg’s work on Machete Squad, you’ll already have an idea of the gritty, intense art style he brings to the table. It pairs perfectly with Millar’s high-stakes storytelling.

The first issue, Vatican City #1, will arrive in comic shops on April 9, 2025. It’s priced at $5.99, and you can pre-order it now at your local shop. There are also two variant covers for collectors, including a black-and-white version by Berg and another variant by McCrea, colored by John Kalisz:

This is a unique twist on the vampire genre, combining action, horror, and survival in a setting like no other. If you’re into high-octane stories where the odds are stacked against the characters, Vatican City is something you won’t want to miss. With Millar’s wild storytelling and Berg’s striking art, this series promises to deliver a fresh and intense experience.
