Darkest Dungeon 2 is set to expand with a free update and a new paid DLC arriving on 27th January 2025 for PC players. The Kingdoms mode offers a fresh gameplay experience alongside the main Confessions campaign.
In this mode, we journey from Inn to Inn on a persistent map, completing quests against the clock. As we progress, we’ll face new enemy factions, starting with the ‘rotting and ravenous beastmen’. Our tasks include completing contracts and upgrading and protecting Inns.
The Inhuman Bondage DLC introduces a mini-region called The Catacombs, where we’ll confront a ‘corrosive, oozing threat’ beneath the Kingdom. This area features new enemies and items, accessible in both Confessions and Kingdoms modes. Additionally, the DLC brings back The Abomination, a fan-favorite hero from the original game. This character comes with a fully-voiced origin story and unique mechanics and items.
Creative director Chris Bourassa shared insights on the development approach, stating that the team aimed to ‘reimagine the very structure of DDII‘ rather than simply adding more content. This led to the creation of an entirely new Kingdoms mode.
Darkest Dungeon 2 is currently available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as on PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Console versions of the free update and DLC are expected to follow the PC release.
Since its initial release in May 2023, Red Hook has been actively updating and refining the game. Our review described it as ‘a copious and often brilliant, if not quite unmissable reworking of a powerfully grim fantasy‘.
