David Harbour Unveils the Intricate Relationship of Red Guardian and Yelena in ‘Thunderbolts’
Marvel’s Thunderbolts is bringing a fresh narrative to the table, with David Harbour’s Red Guardian and Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova at the center of its intriguing storyline. Harbour, in a recent interview with ScreenRant, shed light on the complex dynamics between these two characters.
He revealed that the film delves into the characters’ shared history, particularly their time as spies in the Midwest. This aspect of their past plays a significant role in the movie, adding depth to their relationship. For instance, it mirrors the depth seen in the ‘Black Widow’ film, notably in the scene featuring the song “American Pie.”
What stands out in Harbour’s description is the nuanced relationship between Red Guardian and Yelena. Despite Yelena’s apparent disdain for him, she relies on him in ways that she might not fully understand. This reflects the often complicated nature of real-life relationships, where the people who complete us aren’t always those we would choose.
However, it’s crucial to understand that ‘Thunderbolts’ isn’t a direct sequel to ‘Black Widow.’ Director Jake Schreier emphasizes that the film should be seen as a standalone story, not a continuation of previous events.
Slated for release on July 25, 2025, ‘Thunderbolts’ is a significant part of Marvel’s Phase 6. It follows ‘Fantastic Four’ and precedes ‘Blade,’ leading up to the much-anticipated ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Avengers: Secret Wars.’
The film’s cast combines familiar faces with new talent. Alongside Harbour and Pugh, the movie features Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. Newcomers include Steven Yeun, rumored to play The Sentry, and Ayo Edebiri in an undisclosed role. Harrison Ford is also expected to make an appearance as Thunderbolt Ross.
‘Thunderbolts’ is another collaboration between director Schreier and scriptwriter Sung “Sonny” Jin Lee, following their successful project, ‘Beef’ on Netflix. With such a strong team, ‘Thunderbolts’ promises to be a distinctive and exciting chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
