Daybreak Season 2: Is It Renewed or Canceled?

Daybreak was a unique Netflix series that explored a post-apocalyptic story that combines comedy, action, romance, and coming of age. It had its niche market because there are many different post-apocalyptic series fans out there. Then again, the first season premiered way back in 2019. So, will there be a second season of Daybreak, or is the entire series canceled?

Unfortunately, Daybreak was canceled only about two months since its first season premiered. It didn’t have the same kind of fanfare that most other Netflix series received, as that was what eventually led to its cancelation. In that regard, there won’t be a second season of Daybreak.

It is kind of unfortunate that Daybreak was never renewed even though it had its bright spots. It was kind of funny and entertaining for a series that explored a post-apocalyptic setup. Nevertheless, not a lot of Netflix series actually get renewed for a second season, and it was kind of expected that a series that wasn’t really for everyone would get canceled.

How Did The First Season Of Daybreak End?

Daybreak was actually an intriguing series that was able to find love in those who adore post-apocalyptic series that combine a lot of different elements together. In fact, this series actually combines more elements than what was necessary because of the fact that Daybreak is a post-apocalyptic story that has zombie-like elements, Mad Max-style themes, comedy, action, romance, and coming of age.

The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where only the teenagers are left alive while the adults are all turned into mindless zombie-like beings. We follow the protagonist on an adventure to search for his missing girlfriend as he ends up joining forces with several people in his adventure. And throughout his adventure, he runs into clicks, groups, and factions that combine certain high school elements that don’t make this series any different from a coming-of-age story.

Meanwhile, the villain of the series is a high school principal who somehow was still able to keep some semblance of his sanity as he still ends up succumbing to the effects of the virus that took away the sanity of all of the adults in the world.

Throughout the first season, the protagonist is in search of his girlfriend while making friends with different people that can be considered outcasts in regular high school teenage society. He ends up experiencing feuds among different factions of survivors as they have to fight for their territories and social standing in a new world order.

At the end of the season, the different survivors, regardless of their faction, came together to fight the school principal as they claimed victory. The hero finally takes the opportunity to ride off into the sunset with his girlfriend, only to find out that she refuses to do so because she wants to claim her place as the new leader of this new world order. She ended up taking her place at the top of the new society, as the jocks and the cheerleaders ended up kneeling before their new queen in what was a surprising twist.

Will There Be A Season 2 Of Daybreak?

Of course, the way that season 1 of Daybreak ended opened the possibility of a second season, considering that the protagonist has to find a way to way to reconcile with his tyrannical girlfriend while also making sure that everyone gets to survive in the new world that they were building. So, will there be a season 2 of Daybreak?

Unfortunately, Netflix did not renew Daybreak for a second season. In fact, it only took the streaming giant two months to decide on the fate of Daybreak as they eventually canceled the series. That means that there won’t be a second season or a continuation to the story of this post-apocalyptic teenage adventure.

In a tweet, co-creator Aron Coleite said:

“We learned last week that Daybreak will not be returning for a second season. We’re so sorry we couldn’t share it with you sooner but also grateful that we got to hang out in these last few live-tweet sessions with all of you. Thank you for picking up what we put down, for running with it in all of your amazing, weird, monstrous ways, and for being such an important part of this show and our experience making it. No one is as heartbroken as we are that we can’t share more of this ride with you,” he continued. “But we’re so grateful to have gotten to bring it this far.”

As such, those who actually enjoyed the first season will never get to see a continuation of the story of Daybreak. It might still be possible for the story to get picked up by another network or streaming service but it probably isn’t the case at this point because it has already been nearly three years since Daybreak was axed by Netflix. 

Why Was Daybreak Canceled?

Honestly, we cannot really say why Daybreak was canceled by Netflix. The streaming giant tends to keep its numbers to itself in relation to the different series in its library. However, it is quite possible that Daybreak never impressed its audience to the point that plenty of people were watching it.

As such, after about two months, Netflix realized that Daybreak was never going to pick up in terms of the number of people watching it. And that was when they decided that it was time to pull the plug on this series.

Of course, it could also be a case of doing too much. Daybreak seemingly had too much going on in the series because it attempted to combine a lot of different genres in one post-apocalyptic series. That doesn’t always seem to be the right idea when it comes to certain viewers who want the stories of their shows to focus more on certain elements instead of trying to hit ten birds with a single stone.
