Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was supposed to be Sam Raimi’s triumphant return to the world of comic books, but the director of The Evil Dead and the original Spider-Man trilogy failed to deliver a movie worthy of being called a triumphant return. It wasn’t a bad movie per se and the direction was good, but it was messy and incoherent at times.

But, this article won’t be about the movie, but rather about its influence. Namely, as it turns out, despite all of its shortcomings, the movie ended up being quite important for the future of the MCU, and years after the premiere, many fans are still talking about the movie and its important moments.

A theory we have come up with involves the movie and a group known as the Multiversal Avengers, as we believe that the movie might have set up a potential appearance of this group sometime later, especially with what we know about the third Doctor Strange movie.

There are several important plot details from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that need to be considered when we’re discussing the future of the MCU. A lot of them are related to Wanda, but those aspects have already been at the center of our reports, so we won’t be discussing Wanda directly.

Also, Doctor Strange’s own story won’t be discussed here that much, as what interests us is related to the cameo appearances in the movie.

Namely, you know that the “Multiverse of Madness” portrayed in the movie gave us a glimpse of other universes and we saw alternative versions of several characters, including Mr. Fantastic, Captain Marvel, Professor X, and others.

They were identified as the Illuminati, but they were not the Illuminati of Earth-199999, which is the main MCU timeline, so we can see how deep into the Multiverse the movie went.

At the end of the movie, Clea also appeared and set up what is probably going to be the plot of Doctor Strange 3, a movie we’ve also recently reported about, confirming that Sam Raimi would be coming back to direct the movie. As of the time of writing, we don’t know much about the movie’s plot, but we do know that Dormammu (played by Denzel Washington) will be the movie’s main villain.

So, what does this tell us? Could Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness have teased the Multiversal Avengers? Well… first of all, let us explain who the Multiversal Avengers are. They are not a single group and officially, no group has been called exactly that in the comics. In fact, the name actually refers to three separate groups:

  1. New Avengers (A.I.M.) from Earth-616
  2. The Avengers founded by Avenger Prime related to God Quarry
  3. The “real” Multiversal Avengers, known simply as the Avengers

Neither of these groups was ever known as the “Multiversal Avengers,” but they have all been dubbed that by the editors.

The third group makes the most sense since they are the Avengers composed of members from various universes, which is similar to the second group; the New Avengers are vastly different, but they are related to the “Time Runs Out” arc.

Clea, Doctor Strange, and some members from other Universes, as teased via the Illuminati, could become the Multiversal Avengers in the upcoming movie, especially if it becomes related to the Black Priests, seeing how the Multiverse is unstable at the moment. This certainly sounds like an interesting theory, you’ll agree, but the recent revelations related to the upcoming movie complicate things.

It seems that Marvel won’t be going that deep and that Strange and Clea, while exploring the Multiverse, will more or less be focused on Dormammu, and he is not directly related to these stories and possibilities.

We don’t think there will be many new characters in that aspect and while the Multiversal Avengers could make an appearance later, we don’t think that the movie actually teased anything in that direction.

But, we’d like to hear your opinion as well. What do you think about this theory? Do you have any theories of your own? Let us know in the comments below.
