In a surprising turn, ‘Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake’ has outperformed ‘Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’ in Japan. Within just a week of its release, ‘Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake’ sold 826,945 copies across Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, as reported by Famitsu. In contrast, ‘Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’ has sold 339,168 copies since its February launch.
‘Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake’ is a complete overhaul of the beloved classic, introducing innovative features that have resonated with players. Its success highlights a growing appreciation for games that honor their RPG roots. Meanwhile, ‘Final Fantasy’ has faced challenges, with recent titles not meeting sales expectations.
In 1988, the original ‘Dragon Quest III’ sold a million copies in a single day. Over 30 years later, the remake has achieved nearly that number in a week. This demonstrates a strong demand for classic, turn-based RPGs. While the audience may be smaller than that of mainstream titles like ‘Call of Duty’ or ‘Grand Theft Auto’, it’s evidently substantial.
As ‘Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake’ celebrates its impressive sales and positive reviews, the ‘Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’ team has announced that no additional DLC, similar to ‘Intergrade’, is planned for the game.
Square Enix has acknowledged that both ‘Rebirth’ and ‘Final Fantasy 16’ have not met sales expectations. This contrast suggests that while ‘Final Fantasy’ may be struggling to connect with its fanbase, ‘Dragon Quest’ is thriving by staying true to its origins.
