Drew Goddard to Pen New ‘Matrix’ Film at Warner Bros.
The Matrix franchise is one of the major sci-fi franchises in cinematic history. The Wachowskis came out with the first movie back in 1999 and shocked the world with one of the most innovative stories in the world of sci-fi. Since then, the sisters have created two sequels together while Lana, alone, worked on the fourth film from the series, The Matrix Resurrections. And while not all of these movies were received with acclaim like the first one, The Matrix is undoubtedly a pillar of sci-fi cinema and one of the most important movies ever made.
And while the fourth movie seemingly teased an end for Neo and the story of The Matrix, the guys at Warner Bros. have different plans, as a fifth movie is in the works at the studio, although The Wachowskis won’t be coming back to direct it. Namely, as has been confirmed by the studio, writer, and director Drew Goddard (The Martian, The Cabin in the Woods, and World War Z) has been hired to write and direct the upcoming Matrix film; Lana will reportedly serve as the film’s executive producer.
So far, nothing is known about the planned movie, but it seems that Goddard wants to pitch a completely new take on the story so that the franchise’s universe could be extended even further. What that means for Neo and the other characters from the original tetralogy is unknown at this moment, but it seems that Warner Bros. is backing the project completely and that Goddard will see his idea realized at a later point.
Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production, commented on the news in a statement as follows:
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

Goodard himself seems to be pretty excited about working on the movie, as he said the following: “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
Goddard himself is a big fan of the series and as a writer and director who has established himself as a household name, we might be getting a decent sequel, so we’re quite excited. Of course, be sure to keep following us for more of the latest information about the project.
