Dune 2 To Focus Much More on Harkonnen & Plans To Start Filming This Summer

Dune Harkonnen

Dune was one of the best movies in 2021, which 94th Academy Awards nominations also confirm. Now, we finally get some news about its sequel, and it looks like it will shift focus a bit and that we will find a lot more about evil Harkonnen.

During the time of the Padishah Emperors, House Harkonnen was a Great House. Giedi Prime was their capital, a heavily industrialized planet with a low photosynthetic potential. There was a long-standing feud between House Harkonnen and House Atreides, which was a result of underhanded tactics and sinister politics. Additionally, House Harkonnen was known for ambition, malice, hate, and brutality. They were typically ruled by Siridar Barons.

Some of this was mentioned in the first movie, but not much. We did meat Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in all its gruesome glory, and his nephew Glossu Rabban Harkonnen. Still, a lot has been left untold about the House Harkonnen, as well as about these two, from what we have seen, very intriguing characters. Also, we haven’t jet had a chance to see one crucial character from the books, but also from David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation, and that is Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen.

We do know from the books, that they play a major role in Dune, and would like to see more of them and their House in a live-action movie.

Now, it looks like our prayers will be answered, because the movie director, Denis Villeneuve talked with Empire Online, and here is what he had to say about this subject.

“When you adapt, you have to make bold choices in order for the things to come to life. And I think that was the best way to introduce this world to a wide audience. Now in the second one, I want to have more flexibility, and it will be possible to go a little bit deeper into some of these details.

It’s like a chess game. Some new characters will be introduced in the second part and a decision I made very early on was that this first part would be more about Paul Atreides and the Bene Gesserit, and his experience of being in contact for the first time with a different culture.

Second part, there will be much more Harkonnen stuff.”

We can’t wait to see what he has in store for us, but it looks like we will have to wait a bit longer, because, according to Villeneuve, we should be able to see Dune Part 2 in cinemas on October 2023.

He said that, if nothing major changes, Dune 2 should be moving along nicely by the end of 2022. Check it out below.

“We are supposed to shoot by the end of the summer,” he revealed. “I will say it is mostly designed. The thing that helps us right now is that it’s the first time I’ve revisited a universe. So I’m working with the same crew, everybody knows what to do, we know what it will look like. The movie will be more challenging, but we know where we are stepping. And the screenplay is written. So I feel confident. Frankly, the only big unknown for me right now is the pandemic.”

We hope nothing major will happen and that we will have a chance to see Dune Part 2 in about a year and a half.
