As Disney’s “Moana 2” hits theaters this November, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui, he has some advice for moviegoers: if you’re watching a musical and love it, sing along.
This comes amid a recent debate triggered by the musical film “Wicked,” where some theaters have requested audiences to keep quiet during the screening.
Johnson shared his views on the red carpet, saying, ‘Sing! You’ve paid your hard-earned money for a ticket, and you’re into it. Sing.’ He believes that enjoying the music actively is part of the fun of a musical.
However, not everyone thinks singing along in theaters is appropriate. During “Wicked’s” debut, AMC Theatres reminded patrons through pre-show spots to avoid singing to prevent disturbances, as part of their policy against disruptive behavior.
Ryan Noonan, a spokesperson for AMC, emphasized this policy to the Indianapolis Star, noting that while they appreciate the enthusiasm, the overall experience for all viewers must be considered.
This issue has caught the attention of “Wicked” star Ariana Grande, who commented during the film’s press tour, ‘We understand it if you [sing]. We respect the feelings… but if someone throws popcorn at you, their phone or something, maybe stop.’
Interestingly, Universal Pictures has decided to introduce a sing-along version of “Wicked” starting on Christmas, where singing will be encouraged, addressing the divided opinions on this matter.
Until then, viewers might want to hold off on belting out their favorite tunes, at least during the regular screenings of the musical.
