Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons Confirmed to Reunite in Lanthimos’ Upcoming Film as Focus Features Gets Distribution Rights to ‘Bugonia’

Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons to Reunite in Lanthimos' Upcoming Film as Focus Features Gets Distribution Rights for 'Bugonia'

As we have reported earlier, Oscar-nominated Greek director and filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos certainly doesn’t waste time. Last year’s Poor Things, starring Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe, ended up winning multiple Academy Awards and becoming a major global his, while his upcoming film Kinds of Kindness, also starring Stone, Dafoe, and Jesse Plemons, is being praised by critics after its Cannes premiere, but the Greek filmmaker is already working on his next project, a remake of the 2003 award-winning South Korean sci-fi comedy, Save the Green Planet!, which is set to be titled Bugonia.

We have already reported on the movie, and our earlier report contained rumors that Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone would be reuniting with Lanthimos for the upcoming movie, but nothing had been confirmed at the time. Today, we have finally received an official confirmation that the two of them will be portraying the main roles in the movie.

The news comes fresh from Cannes, where it was also revealed that Focus Features will take over the US distribution of the movie, replacing Searchlight. Universal Pictures will distribute the title internationally (excluding South Korea). The movie is slated to be released sometime in 2025, but no window has been given yet.

As we have said, Bugonia is a remake of a popular South Korean movie that was released back in 2003. The original movie was written and directed by Jang Joon-hwan and focuses on the story of a man called Lee Byeong-gu, who kidnaps another man convinced that he is actually an alien. The movie won numerous awards in Asia and the world back in 2003, although it never became a global hit due to the fact that Korean cinematography was not as popular back then as it is now.

The remake of the movie will be directed by Lanthimos and produced by fellow director Ari Aster, who is also working on a new project, which is also something we have written about already.

Lanthimos’ movie will provide us with a slightly different take on the original story, but the gist of it will remain. No other cast members have been revealed, but based on Lanthimos’ streak, Willem Defoe is still a likely candidate for a return. This is all that is known at this moment, but be sure to keep following us for more information and updates related to this movie.
