Eric Kripke on the Season 4 Finale: “As far as we’re concerned, it’s our show’s version of the apocalypse”

The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world, and its fourth season just ended after eight episodes, and it ended with a proper bang. After receiving mixed reviews at first, the show gathered up steam and secured a Certified Fresh rating in addition to a sizable audience, as Amazon and Nielsen officially confirmed. However, the season’s growing political overtone has led to a lot of unhappy fans review-bombing it, but the showrunners didn’t appear to care one way or the other.
The season ended on July 18, 2024, when The Boys released the final episode of Season 4, titled “Season Four Finale” (initially “Assassination Run,” but read our special report on why the title was changed). We have already provided you with the fans’ and critics’ reactions to the finale, which was completely crazy, and set up the final season in the best way possible.
But, the people behind the series themselves have also reacted to the final episode and the season as a whole. In a talk given to LADbible, series showrunner Eric Kripke gave his thoughts and opinions on the crazy finale, as well as Homelander’s role in the events that transpired in the episode.
In a brief, a bit spoiler-ish recap, we can reveal that the Season 4 finale of The Boys set up a pretty grim and depressing future for the series. Despite all the chaos and craziness, Homelander seems to have won, as his coup – orchestrated together with Sage – seemingly succeeded and he can now do whatever he wants, as The Boys are seemingly done. This definitely sets up an exciting final season, and fans around the world are discussing the episode, as well as its impact going forward.
In our recent articles, we have reported on how the critics reacted to the episode, as well as how the fans reacted to some of the season’s most important scenes. We also revealed that Antony Starr, the main actor of the series, thought about his character’s victory, but no report would be complete without Eric Kripke.
Kripke is known for reacting on social media from time to time, but he has also provided us with numerous background information in a series of recent interviews, so it’s always interesting to see and hear what he has to say about the show, and this confirmation is certainly interesting. This time, LADbible contacted him about the Season 4 finale, and here is what he said about it:
“You know, I think the finale of season four really shows you that we’ve been planning five years all along, because there’s no way a show goes one more season after the events of that finale. As far as we’re concerned, it’s our show’s version of the apocalypse.”

He also commented on Homelander, now that the character’s role has changed significantly and now that the main villain is the one who runs things in the series:
“Homelander gets everything he has wanted from the beginning, which is to completely remake the United States in his image, and according to his whims. The boys are at their lowest point, most of them are captured, and we worry for their future.”

So, what does this mean for the future? What does this mean going forward? Well, Kripke also provided us with an insight as to what we can expect from the final season of the show:
“I always look at it as of the five seasons, we’re kind of at that point, that’s sort of the end of the second act of a movie where everyone’s really at their low point, and they’ve all faced their own personal demons. Now, they need to really come together in the fifth season and save the world.”

The situation is very grim and very depressing at this point. There doesn’t seem to be anything that the fans can take from this dark turn of events, but Kripke has given us hope that Season 5 will change that. The Boys are in a very grim place now, but they know what they need to do. Their enemy is there, and it is clear what they need to do going forward, which they will – we are sure of it – be able to do with the help of their allies.
Be that as it may, an exciting final season is what we can expect, and until then, be sure to keep following us for all the news and updates!
