The Boys is one of the most popular superhero series in the world and the series is currently in its fourth season, which is going strong and is one of the most talked about series in the world as of the time of writing. While the series has been receiving praise from critics since its debut, there has also been a lot of fan backlash, which is not surprising, seeing how controversial the series can get from time to time. The backlash has been directed at the series in general, but some of the people involved have also been targets of toxic “fans” and haters.

One of the best examples of such harassment is the situation with Erin Moriarty, who plays Starlight in the series and is one of the show’s main characters. During 2023 and earlier this year, Erin Moriarty was harassed online by toxic fans, mostly because of her appearance, as she had seemingly undergone plastic surgery, so the fans began to attack and insult her based on her appearance. It was a tough period for Moriarty, but it seems that she has since been able to recover.

Back when the whole affair started, Moriarty commented on the backlash and the abuse in a since-deleted Instagram post which appeared in January 2024, which said:

“This is something I truly never anticipated writing. We’re all subject to levels of bullying throughout our lives but I am horrified, and I felt that I deserved to take a second to address these things. I am horrified by the reaction, the reductive assumptions, and the aforementioned video that is a primary example of such harassment. It’s broken my heart. You’ve broken my heart.”

The actress then left social media in order to deal with the harassment, and she was also targeted by the media and paparazzi over the whole affair and you can imagine how much impact that had on her life in general. Luckily for her, her Boys colleagues were quick to jump in to defend and support her.

Showrunner Eric Kripke was quick to attack the fans on Twitter, saying: “Be kind. If you can’t be kind, then eat a bag of dicks, fuck off to the sun & don’t watch #TheBoys, we don’t want you.” Antony Starr was also quick to support Moriarty and the actress herself recently confirmed that she had amazing support from her co-stars. Karen Fukuhara, who plays Kimiko, said: “I was really worried about her for a period of time. Nobody is bulletproof, even though I think she’s close to it.

And so… the situation calmed down, as these things usually do. Moriarty continued with her work on The Boys, and she is now enjoying the success of the fourth season along with her colleagues. In a recent interview with the New York Times, the actress commented on the whole affair and how she managed to come out stronger out of the whole situation:

“For a few months, I thought my career was over. Because there was so much attention brought to something that I was told never to address. I had left it on a note where I’d explicitly said that I had been heartbroken by the comments. Now, I’m not heartbroken. I’m galvanized.”
