Fans Think That Kevin Feige Ruined Two Major Marvel Moments with Recent Decisions

In 2008, Marvel Studios released Iron Man, starring Robert Downey, Jr. The movie was a critical and commercial hit, but more than for its individual achievements, the movie is today lauded for being the first installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the biggest unified cinematic narrative in history. The person behind the whole project, the main architect of the MCU is producer Kevin Feige, whose creative ideas and guidance helped shape the MCU. He is the one who defined the current brand of superhero movies and that is why his opinion always matters.

And while Feige has, more or less, been on the spot with his decisions and was one of the least criticized studio heads in Hollywood (just compare how people are trashing Kathleen Kennedy, which might be gender-based, really), he has recently come under scrutiny, as some fans are criticizing his recent decisions.

Namely, we know that Feige brought Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine for Deadpool & Wolverine, and we have recently found out that Robert Downey Jr. is coming back to the MCU as Victor Von Doom, who is going to be the main villain in the upcoming Avengers movies. Some fans believe that Feige destroyed two important moments in the movies with these two decisions.

We cannot deny that the fans were overjoyed when Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine was officially confirmed, and it certainly was a major moment. At the same time, rumors related to RDJ’s potential MCU return had been circulating a while before it was actually confirmed, although we have to admit that not many fans guessed that he would return in such a capacity. But, some fans stress out the issues with this, as you will see:

So, what are they actually talking about?

Well, in Wolverine’s case, they are referring to the final moments of Logan, the critically acclaimed movie that brought Wolverine’s X-Men story to a noble end. In the movie, Wolverine dies in a heartbreaking yet heroic way, and his story is, in that aspect, over. Bringing him back for Deadpool & Wolverine was a major moment, but some fans believed that Feige stomped over the emotional ending of Logan with such a decision. But, this one is less problematic, really, as time travel is involved, so with different timelines in play, there are also different opportunities there.

On the other hand, RDJ’s case is even less problematic, but at the same time – it is even more problematic. As we know, RDJ sacrificed himself as Iron Man in Endgame to save the world, in the MCU’s most emotional moment to date. Many fans cried over it, and it was a sacrifice that made Iron Man immortal in the eyes of the fans. So, what’s the problem now? RDJ is coming back, but in a different role altogether, so Iron Man’s legacy won’t be tarnished in any way. But there’s the catch.

Namely, RDJ’s interpretation of Iron Man has been so iconic for MCU fans that they are viewing RDJ as Iron Man and vice versa. For the fans, the two are one, and seeing someone else play Iron Man is considered to be blasphemy, but at the same time, seeing RDJ play someone else in the MCU is also seen as blasphemy by some fans. This is why some fans are saying that Feige has ruined the emotional moments in question.

What does this mean going forward? Well, not much. The majority of the fans are overjoyed to see Jackman and RDJ back, so this is certainly going to be a great move going forward, although Marvel will have to tread carefully so as not to overuse the nostalgia if they want this to be a success in the end.
