The first footage from The Stolen Child, a medieval fantasy film inspired by Celtic mythology, has just been revealed. From the looks of it, this movie blends the epic scale of The Lord of the Rings with the atmospheric beauty of The Green Knight.

Written and directed by Sebastian McKinnon, who also works as an illustrator for Magic: The Gathering, this project is a long-time dream for the filmmaker. Thanks to Variety, we now have a full preview of what’s shaping up to be a breathtaking film.

The story of The Stolen Child began years ago when Sebastian and his brother Benjamin went backpacking across Scotland. Immersed in the myths and legends of Celtic folklore, they came up with the idea for their own fantasy world.

The film is set in a realm where humans and faeries coexist, but tragedy strikes when the human king and queen are suddenly killed. Their young son, unprepared for the throne, finds himself caught in a world on the edge of chaos.

To save the child from grief and danger, the Faerie Queen takes him to the Faerie State, hoping to protect his innocence. However, her kind act creates unintended consequences, plunging the human world deeper into turmoil.

As the balance between the two realms collapses, a group of unlikely heroes comes together to find the lost prince. The group includes a poet, a knight, a horse, and a fae princess, all working to restore harmony by returning the boy to his kingdom.

The trailer showcases the stunning production design, with scenes of knights and faeries set against the sweeping Scottish Highlands:

The film’s rich cinematography promises an epic adventure. It will debut at the European Film Market in Berlin, where it hopes to secure international distribution. A 2026 release date has been teased, but that depends on final deals with distributors.

This project is deeply personal for McKinnon. The Stolen Child originally began as three short films created by Sebastian and Benjamin, all of which are available on YouTube.

Tragically, in 2016, Benjamin died by suicide, leaving Sebastian with a mission to complete the project they had dreamed of together. ‘His last words to me were to continue to create magic with film,’ McKinnon shared, explaining that his brother’s motto, ‘Dream, Rise, Ignite,’ has guided him through the process.

McKinnon has high hopes for the movie, aiming to make it the greatest fantasy film since The Lord of the Rings. Judging by the trailer, it just might be a contender. With its breathtaking visuals and heartfelt story, The Stolen Child is shaping up to be a must-watch for fantasy lovers.
