The MonsterVerse is no stranger to eerie creatures, and Godzilla has faced off against some unsettling foes like Hedorah and Biollante in the past. In the upcoming comic series ‘Mothra: Queen of The Monsters‘, set to release on March 5 next year, a fresh and terrifying bug kaiju named Antra is introduced.
This new villain is already being dubbed the creepiest kaiju yet, and interestingly, its sights are set not on Godzilla, but on Mothra, the queen.
Published by IDW Publishing, the storyline reveals a world plunged into chaos after Mothra’s defeat by Antra. With humanity hiding from freely roaming kaiju, hope rests on the shoulders of Mira, a young woman from the wastelands.
Mira’s adventure begins when her presumed-lost twin sister arrives with two fairies, claiming Mira could be the key to Mothra’s rebirth and Earth’s salvation. Their plan involves a daring journey back to the Jurassic period to retrieve Mothra’s egg.
Artist Matt Frank, who unveiled Antra, calls this new bug kaiju the ‘Empress of Entropy‘. While Godzilla’s appearance isn’t confirmed in the comic, Mothra seems in dire need of allies against such a powerful adversary.
Aside from the comics, Mothra’s presence is felt in the MonsterVerse films. Despite her demise in ‘Godzilla: King of The Monsters’, she made a comeback in ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’.
Here, she played a crucial role in uniting Godzilla and Kong against their enemies, Shimo and the Skar King. This success has led to the announcement of a third Godzilla x Kong movie.
Moreover, Apple TV+ has confirmed the second season of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’, where Mothra might appear after being absent in the first season.
The streaming service is also developing a spin-off series to expand the MonsterVerse, with few details currently known. This expansion shows a promising future for the legendary kaiju universe.
