Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has perfectly combined Japanese fiction’s artistry with Western fiction’s tropes to create a wonderful fantasy work that is extremely popular worldwide, and for a good reason. While the protagonists are the story’s focus, in this article, we will discuss something different – a species of monster from the series known as Gargoyles. This is a well-known term among fantasy fans, but Frieren is always specific, and in this article, we are going to explain what the Gargoyles from Frieren are and how dangerous they are in the series, as well as how they can be defeated.

  • Article Breakdown:
  • In the world of Frieren, Gargoyles are humanoid, winged monsters that pretend to be statues. They are usually located in Dungeons and have the element of surprise on their side.
  • Gargoyles are usually seen in pairs and attack unsuspecting adventurers who do not know or expect it. They have very high defense and are able to fly, but it seems that they can use only physical attacks.
  • Strong magic attacks are usually enough to defeat a Gargoyle, but it has to be destroyed. On the other hand, they are much easier to defeat before they actually start moving.

Gargoyles are humanoid monsters that imitate statues

The world of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is one of the most beautiful and magical fantasy worlds seen in the animanga lore. The landscapes and the numerous magical creatures seen in the series are wonderful. In this article, we will talk about a specific type of creature, a monster to be precise, that we’ve seen in the series. The monsters we are going to talk about look like statues, and they are well-known among fantasy fans. They are called Gargoyles, and we are now going to tell you all you need to know about them.

The Gargoyles were first introduced in the Ruins of the King’s Tomb during the second part of the First-Class Mage Exam. It is likely that Gargoyles inhabit other places as well, but they had their debut here; it is unknown how common they are and whether they are primarily Dungeon-dwellers or something else. What do they look like?

Well, they look like standard Gargoyles. The ones shown in the series were depicted as humanoid monsters with wings, something like demons or devils, but we do not know if they all look like this or whether there are other designs present. Skilled adventurers can easily identify them, though, as Denken and Frieren, for example, immediately identified the statues as Gargoyles. This reveals that despite their camouflage routine, they have the element of surprise only against less-experienced adventurers; skilled and more experienced ones will have an easy task of identifying them, which is very important in planning a defense against these types of monsters.

What we are going to reveal in the upcoming section is how Gargoyes can be defeated, i.e., what is needed to defeat them in Frieren.

A Gargoyle is easier to defeat before it starts moving

In terms of fighting Gargoyles, there are several things we have to consider. As far as it seems, Gargoyles can use only physical attacks. What makes fighting them so tricky is that they can fly and have very high defense; it takes a lot of firepower to actually defeat a Gargoyle in Frieren, as they can withstand a lot of attacks and even lose some of their body parts. This is why they are considered to be tricky opponents, but they are definitely not top-tier monsters and are not as lethal as some other monsters that we have already written about here on Fiction Horizon.

But, there is a very easy “cheat code” one can use when Gargoyles are concerned. Namely, Gargoyles are tricky opponents only if they start moving. It seems that until they sense the presence of someone, they are actual statues, and the good thing here is that one has to come really really close to them to bring them to life. This means that an adventurer will see a Gargoyle sooner than a Gargoyle will see an adventurer.

This gives the adventurer ample time to destroy a Gargoyle before it even starts moving, and that is a very good cheat code that can be used when fighting them. If one attacks a Gargoyle before it starts moving, defeating the Gargoyle will be a relatively easy task. Before they start moving, they are like regular stone statues and if you have enough power, they will break easily.
