‘Furiosa’: Chris Hemsworth Is Playing a Bad Guy in George Miller’s Movie
Furiosa will be released in 2024 and it will follow the origin story of renegade warrior Furiosa before she teamed up with Mad Max in Fury Road (2015). The titular role will be played by Anna-Taylor Joy (The Queen’s Gambit, Split ) and she will work together with Chris Hemsworth. When Hemsworth was confirmed to be a part of the cast, many fans guessed that he will play alongside Taylor-Joy as her partner and an ally, not her enemy.
However, the producer P.J.Voeten had teased a different role for Hemsworth this time. In author Kyle Buchanan’s new oral history, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road, he announced that Hemsworth will play a “lead baddie” and not a typical good guy we are used seeing him as.
“George saw Chris initially as a courtesy and then fell in love with the idea. He’s going to play totally against type, the lead baddie. Unfortunately, we’ve got to find all of our other characters that aren’t around anymore: a new Immortan, a new Bullet Farmer, and a few others.”
George Miller and Brendan McCarthy realized during the process of writing for Mad Max: Fury Road, that they had enough material for two more scripts. Miller said that detailed backstories for characters were already created in Fury Road, including Furiosa’s, whose entire script was already written, so it would be a shame not to make a spin-off centering her.
Furiosa will open in theaters on May 24, 2024.
