Australian filmmaker George Miller has been described as both a genius and a visionary. He seems to know how to make a great project and his fame began in 1979, when he introduced the world to the first movie from the Mad Max franchise, a cult classic series that initially starred Mel Gibson in the titular role before he was replaced by Tom Hardy in Fury Road. As we all know, the franchise continued with a fifth movie, a prequel titled Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which explores the origins of Imperator Furiosa, a character introduced in Fury Road. The movie received a long-standing ovation at Cannes this year, and it was finally released in cinemas on May 23, 2024.

Is the movie any good? Should yo go watch it? The early Cannes reviews were all for it, but we can now confirm that the movie is an absolute hit with both critics and fans, and it is definitely slated to be one of the best films of the year, without a doubt!

We have already reported how the early reviews from Cannes praised the movie, but the situation has changed now – and for the better. With more than 250 reviews, the movie has been “Certified Fresh” by RT’s Tomatometer, with the critical consensus revealing the following: “Retroactively enriching Fury Road with greater emotional heft if not quite matching it in propulsive throttle, Furiosa is another glorious swerve in mastermind George Miller’s breathless race towards cinematic Valhalla.” On top of that, Metacritic also gave the movie an average 79/100 rating, which means that the movie received “generally favorable” reviews from critics.

But, if you thought that it was just the critics – you were wrong! Namely, the audiences and the critics are in complete agreement over Furiosa, with the people on Metacritic giving it an average 7.3 score (generally favorable), while Rotten Tomatoes does even better with an amazing audience score of 92%. So, as you can assume, Furiosa is definitely a major hit, and while it is not the best installment in the Mad Max franchise, it is definitely worth your time, as it is a movie that expands the fictional universe in the best way possible.

Anya Taylor-Joy appears in the movie in the main role as Imperator Furiosa (Alyla Browne is portraying a child version of the character), alongside Chris Hemsworth as Warlord Dementus, Tom Burke as Praetorian Jack, Lachy Hulme as the new actor behind the role of Immortan Joe / Rizzdale Pell, Nathan Jones as Rictus Erectus, John Howard as The People Eater, Angus Sampson as The Organic Mechanic, Charlee Fraser as Mary Jo Bassa, Furiosa’s mother, and Daniel Webber as War Boy.

As for the plot of the movie, the official synopsis reveals the following information about the upcoming feature:

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

By all standards, Furiosa is already a hit and a valuable addition to the Mad Max canon, and it seems that the box office numbers are also going to be good, based on the current predictions.
