When Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy became new leaders at Warner Bros., they presented their very ambitious plans to the public, which included the revitalization of The Lord of the Rings movie franchise. The pair traveled to New Zealand to talk with Peter Jackson about the franchise, and it was confirmed yesterday that a new Lord of the Rings was indeed in the works, to be released in 2026. The movie is going to be titled The Hunt for Gollum and will see Andy Serkis return to the titular role, but also as the director of the upcoming movie.
Details on the movie are still scarce, as we don’t know where in the timeline the movie will be positioned, but we know that Peter Jackson is back as a producer, so we assume that the movie will have the same vibe as Jackson’s two trilogies. Serkis is quite excited about going back to the role that made him famous and he was quick to show his enthusiasm on social networks.
Andy Serkis was quick to post a selfie of himself and Gollum on his Instagram profile, saying: “We is baaaaak, Precious!”. The photo can be seen on Serkis’ official Instagram account. Earlier, the actor made a lengthier statement about coming back to the franchise, saying the following: “Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle Earth Peter, Fran, and Philippa.”
Fran and Philippa are actually Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, the writers of the upcoming The Hunt for Gollum, and they have also shared their enthusiasm about working with Serkis once again: “It is an honor and a privilege to travel back to Middle-earth with our good friend and collaborator, Andy Serkis, who has unfinished business with that stinker — Gollum.”
It is still unknown when in the timeline the movie is going to be set, but if we go back to the 2009 fan movie of the same name, which was based on Tolkien’s appendices to the books, we can assume that the movie is going to be set during the timeline of The Fellowship of the Ring, but this has yet to be confirmed. Also, aside from Serkis, we don’t know if other characters from the original trilogy will return, but there is a possibility that we will be seeing some members of the original cast.
The movie is currently set for a 2026 release, as we have said above, and that is all that we know at this point. But this is certainly exciting, and we are sure that more information will be revealed in the upcoming months, so don’t forget to follow us for all the updates!
