We know that people like to collect things. Sometimes, it’s not that expensive if your appetites aren’t that big, but at times, being a proper collector can be a real strain on your budget. This is why there are various types of collectors and various types of collectibles to enjoy in that aspect.
We have recently reported about an original Stormtrooper costume set being sold out in an auction, but this time, we while staying on the same topic, we have decided to give you a slightly different perspective on the topic of movie memorabilia, and one that is more luxurious.
Thanks to our friends at Public Desire, whom we can thank for the information provided, we have decided to provide you with a list of the nine most expensive movie memorabilia of all time, starting with 9th place and finishing with the 1st, which is also going to be the most expensive one. Of course, you’re going to see these memorabilia as well.
9. The dancefloor from Saturday Night Fever – $1.7 million (2020)
Saturday Night Fever is a cult classic 1977 film that defined the disco era in the best way possible. It helped the career of the legendary Bee Gees, as well as John Travolta’s career and the movie is known even to those who have not seen it.
The dancefloor on which Travolta showed us his epic dance moves is the only set piece on this list, having been sold for an amazing $1.7 million back in 2020, which is also the most recent addition to this top 10 list. We have no clue what the owner did with it, but we hope that he is still having fun!
8. Star Wars‘ R2-D2 – $2.75 million (2017)
R2-D2 is one of the most iconic film characters of all time. The small robot became something of a mascot for the franchise and much like the previous listing, even if you haven’t seen the films, you probably know who R2-D2 is.
The movie replica was sold for an epic $2.75 million back in 2017 and it quickly landed on this list. We don’t know how functional it is when compared to the movie version, but just having the original robot sounds like a blast for a Star Wars fan.
7. Dorothy’s ruby slippers from The Wizard of Oz – $3 million (total)
There were, as you can imagine, several pairs of these shoes and if you count all the ones sold at auctions throughout the years, the total price amounts to around $3 million, which is absolutely amazing.
The slippers were worn by Judy Garland in the movie and they are today considered a piece of cinema history, as well as one of the most cherished pieces of movie memorabilia of all time. We imagine that having them is a great honor.
6. The Cowardly Lion costume from The Wizard of Oz – $3.07 million (2014)
We’re still in Oz with this one, as another piece of movie history reached an exceptional price back in 2017. This is when Bert Lahr’s costume from The Wizard of Oz was sold for an amazing $3.07 million, quickly reaching the top then. The Cowardly Lion is one of the most memorable characters from the movie and the costume is without a doubt a piece of cinema history so we can completely understand why someone would give so much money to own it.
5. The Batmobile from the Batman series – $4.6 million (2013)
The 1960s campy series starring Adam West and Burt Ward is a classic of superhero television, regardless of the fact that it is now outdated and has nothing to do with how superhero storylines are perceived and portrayed today.
The Batmobile from the series, filled with numerous gadgets, was sold for $4.6 million back in 2013. We don’t know if the gadgets are still functional or whether the car can be driven, but do remember to check around town at nighttime – maybe Batman will show up!
4. Marylin Monroe’s “Happy Birthday” dress – $4.8 million (2016)
You might think that a regular dress (as it was, more or less, a regular dress) wouldn’t be more expensive than a car, but this piece is not just a piece of memorabilia, it is also a piece of history.
It is the dress worn by Marylin Monroe during her “Happy Birthday” performance to US President John F. Kennedy, which is now a piece of history. We don’t know that it’s worth this much, but we can understand why someone would give so much money for it.
3. Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet – $5.375 million (2017)
The Forbidden Planet is currently on track to being remade, as the beloved sci-fi classic will be presented to new audiences from a new perspective. But, back when it aired, it was an instant classic and fans of the movie will still remember many moments from one of the most important sci-fi outings of all time.
Robby the Robot is a cult classic character from the movie and the price he was sold for makes absolute sense in more ways than one, as he is a cinema icon and one of the most recognizable movie characters of all time.
2. Marylin Monroe’s subway dress from The Seven-Year Itch – $5.6 million (2011)
Now, if we’re talking about Marylin Monroe, this is certainly a much more iconic piece of memorabilia related to the legendary actress.
There are numerous reasons why this white dress ended up on this list and why it is regarded as one of the most famous moments in the history of cinema. It was sold for an amazing price back in 2011 and we can understand why someone decided to pay that much money for it.
1. James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 – $6.4 million (2019)
The top of the list belongs to Bond. James Bond. This doesn’t surprise us, really, as the lore of this franchise is something that has become a part of pop culture in general and we can understand why such an epic car would be sold for so much money.
It was driven by Sean Connery in Goldfinger and Thunderball, and much like the Batmobile, it was filled with trademark gadgets. We don’t know how functional they are, but we believe that the car is still functional, so kudos to the owner.
