Did You Know that Henry Cavill Gave His Support to the Controversial Black Superman Project?
Warner Bros., the company that owns the rights to DC Comics characters, wanted to develop its own shared universe after seeing how successful Disney’s MCU was, which is why the initial DCEU was created.
Despite its potential, star power, and some amazing films, the DCEU was destined to fail before its time because far too many bad decisions and miscalculated choices were made along the way.
James Gunn was called in in the meantime to revamp and lead the new DCU, which resulted in a series of changes, including a lot of casting changes, some new projects being announced, and some old projects being canceled or simply altered.
One of the DCEU’s more controversial projects at the time was the planned Black Superman film project led by J.J. Abrams. The movie would have brought Calvin Ellis to the big screen as Superman, following his debut in Final Crisis #7. Michael B. Jordan was attached to the role and while the fate of the project is doubtful, some time ago it received support from a very interesting source!
Earlier this year, we reported that James Gunn confirmed that Abram’s Elseworlds project about Calvin Ellis is still in development.
We don’t have any details for you, but it does seem that Gunn is moving forward with the project and that we might just see Calvin Ellis on the screen, which would be amazing, as Ellis is the President of the United States in his universe, so seeing Superman as President would be awesome.
But, regardless of that, we managed to dig up an old interview that shows the project received support from a very interesting source, which is definitely something that is worth noting in light of everything that happened since that 2021 interview. Here is the quote:
It’s exciting — Superman’s far more than skin color. Superman is an ideal. Superman’s an extraordinary thing that lives within our hearts.
Why not have multiple Supermen going on? Joaquin Phoenix did a wonderful Joker movie; so what if it’s not tied to the rest of [the franchise]? They have multiple Superman comic book storylines happening at the same time.

Who said this? Well, it was none other than Henry Cavill himself. The actor who played the DCEU’s Superman voiced his support for Abrams’ project, believing that it could work as effectively as Phillips’ Joker movie, which was also released under the Elseworlds brand.
These movies have, so far, been successful so if Abrams’ project moves forward, we hope that it will be in line with the previous Elseworlds projects and that we will get another great movie in the future.
