Despite Gunn’s Claims, Henry Cavill’s Old Statement Suggests that Gunn and Safran Did Have Something to Do with His Firing

Warner Bros., the company that owns the rights to DC Comics characters, wanted to develop its own shared universe after seeing how successful Disney’s MCU was, which is why the initial DCEU was created.

Despite its potential, star power, and some amazing films, the DCEU was destined to fail before its time because far too many bad decisions and miscalculated choices were made along the way.

And James Gunn was then called. When James Gunn took over the DCEU, which was in complete disarray, he made the decision to start over and create a new fictional universe dubbed the DCU. A lot of changes were made, and one of the first major shifts was David Corenswet being cast as Superman.

This, of course, meant that Henry Cavill, whom the fans loved as the Man of Steel, was fired from the role, a decision that is still sparking controversy in the entertainment industry. And while James Gunn recently claimed that he had nothing to do with it, an old statement by Cavill actually casts a shadow over this statement, as you will soon see.

Henry Cavill’s firing from the role of Superman is a decision that a lot of fans still don’t agree with. Henry Cavill was a fan-favorite in the role, and despite the mediocre results of the DCEU as a whole, the fans believed that Cavill delivered an amazing performance and called for him to continue playing the character in the DCU as well.

But, as you know, that did not happen, as James Gunn came in and replaced Cavill with Corenswet for his upcoming Superman movie.

The fans believe that it was James Gunn personally who fired Henry Cavill, but the filmmaker recently – seemingly – cleared things up by revealing that the decision to fire Cavill was not his but rather something Warner had already decided before he came in:

This is an old tweet that we recently found for you and reported on in our article, but while this statement seemingly clears Gunn’s name in this whole affair, an old statement by Henry Cavill sheds a completely different light on the issue:

I have just had a meeting with James Gunn and Peter Safran and it’s sad news, everyone. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.

The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes.

As you can see, this statement by Cavill himself implies that Gunn and Safran coming in resulted in him being fired, while Gunn claims that the two moments were unrelated, implying that Warner is to “blame.” Be that as it may, like in most such cases, the decision is probably somewhere in the middle, and both parties are probably right, at least partially.

The state of things is that Cavill won’t be returning as Superman in the foreseeable future, while Corenswet is going to be the main Superman in the DCU, and that is a fact that we simply have to accept.
