Is Henry Cavill’s ‘Warhammer’ Franchise Happening? Not Unless It’s Settled by the End of the Year!

As you probably know, Henry Cavill, despite being enormously popular and loved by many fans, doesn’t seem to be able to catch a break. His work as Superman is over, as Gunn decided to replace him with David Corenswet, and his franchise success – The Witcher – also ended up with him being replaced with Liam Hemsworth. His recent project, Argylle, failed miserably, and while he is not out of work, his career is not on the level you’d expect.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare did fairly well, but the movie is Guy Ritchie’s project, not Cavill’s, so as far as Cavill’s passion projects are concerned, he is left with only one really, but recent information suggests that even that one might be on its way into the trash pile.

We know that Cavill is a passionate gamer and that he wants to adapt the famous Warhammer video and board game series into a TV series and a movie, which would be distributed by Amazon. The project has been in the works for some time now, but the latest reports state that it has very little time to actually come to life, which is certainly not good news!

As you probably know, Warhammer 40,000 is a so-called miniature wargame, the most popular such game in the world. It first appeared in 1987 and has a decades-long tradition, having since been adapted into board game format as well as video game format. As one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time, it makes sense that people wanted to see it on the big screen, and Henry Cavill, a passionate gamer among actors, took it upon himself to produce and star in a potential Warhammer franchise that would include movies and a TV series as well. Not that long ago, here is what he said about the project:

“It is the greatest privilege of my professional career to have this opportunity. Uh, I… I can’t say too much again, it’s early days still, but to have this opportunity to bring it to the screen and be at the tiller, so it can be faithful, is… is key to me. And this is this is the stuff I’ve I’ve been dealing with since I was a kid. This is sort of is is the stuff I… I spend my free time daydreaming about, as an adult as well, and I get to bring it into life, and there is… there is… no greater reason than I join the industry than doing something like this and, uh… I’m… I’m very happy to be here.”

As you can see, contacts with Amazon had been made, and it seemed like the project was moving forward, but we’ve had no news about it for a while now, which – naturally – raised a lot of suspicions. On top of that, Cavill has been fired from the DCU and left The Witcher franchises in the meantime, which sparked further worries among the fans.

Games Workshop, the company behind the game, is also working with Amazon and has been working with them since December 2023 to finalize the so-called “creative guidelines” for the upcoming project. However, the deadline for the guidelines to be agreed on is December 2024, and Games Workshop has made it clear that the project “will only proceed if the creative guidelines are mutually agreed between Games Workshop and Amazon.” It is now August, basically, and we still have no updates, which has some fans worried that the project might soon be scrapped, which would be a major blow to Cavill’s career without a doubt.

This would be a personal blow as well, as the actor recently said:

“I have loved Warhammer since I was boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility. I couldn’t be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo, Amazon and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh-on lifelong dream come true.”

We don’t know yet what is actually going to happen with the whole project, but we will definitely keep you updated and report on things as soon as we have some new information for you.
