It seems that a new The Exorcist movie is in the works and no, Russell Crowe is not attached to play the priest who will be doing the exorcising in the movie. But, the upcoming Blumhouse and Universal horror film has seemingly found its director after David Gordon Green, who directed last year’s reboot film The Exorcist: Believer, left the project altogether. As things stand now, renowned genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan is in talks to direct the next Exorcist movie, and based on his earlier work, this might be a hit for the two studios.
Not much is known about the project, as it is still in the early production phases, but we know that the two companies plan to make two additional films, completing the sequel (reboot) trilogy. In fact, Green’s The Exorcist: Deceiver was supposed to come out on April 18, 2025, but after Green’s exit, the movie was postponed indefinitely.
As things stand now, Flanagan is set to take over The Exorcist: Deceiver, as well as the third planned movie from the trilogy, although nothing has been confirmed or formalized yet. Green’s exit caused a lot of problems, but it seems that the franchise is slowly getting back on its feet and that we are going to see the planned movies come out; we just don’t know when.
This is the only piece of information we have, as Blumhouse and Universal had to do a revamp of the whole project, but Flanagan definitely seems like a good choice. He has just finished work on the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck, starring Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill, but he is also known for directing The Fall of the House of Usher for Netflix, a series inspired by the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His other projects include the adaptation of King’s novels Doctor Sleep and Gerald’s Game, as well as other movies like Ouija: Origin of Evil and Oculus, and series The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, The Midnight Club, and others.
