Is Babu Frik in ‘The Mandalorian’? The Anzellans Explained

babu and grogu

Season 3 of The Mandalorian opened up with many different easter eggs that Star Wars fans had a lot of reasons to be excited about. Of course, one such scene was when Din Djarin tried to get IG-11 fixed and had to go to a group of droid experts that Greef Karga said were the best for fixing droids. This allowed us to see a group of small characters (called the Anzellans) that resemble the lovable Babu Frik that fans adored during the events of the sequel trilogy. So, is Babu Frik in The Mandalorian?

An Anzellan resembling Babu Frik was in episode 1 of season 3 of The Mandalorian. But while he talked like Babu and had the same droid expertise that Babu is known for, this Anzellan was never called Babu. We can neither confirm nor deny that this Anzellan was Babu Frik.

The fact that The Mandalorian has included a lot of different Star Wars characters that we’ve seen in the past makes this series so interesting, as it seems to connect all of the Star Wars movies in one solid storyline. As such, there’s a good chance that this little guy was indeed Babu Frik, as The Mandalorian is never shy about easter eggs and cameo appearances.

What Are the Anzellans in The Mandalorian?

One of the things that we learned in episode 1 of season 3 of The Mandalorian was the fact that Din Djarin was so intent on making sure that he redeemed himself by bathing in the waters of the mines of Mandalore, which was the only way for any Mandalorian apostate to return to the tribe. Of course, we know that he was exiled from the Children of the Watch when the Armorer learned that he had removed his helmet in front of another person, as this was against the beliefs of the tribe.

In that regard, Din and Grogu are now looking to find a way to get into the mines of Mandalore, which are widely believed to have been destroyed years ago during the Purge of Mandalore, which turned the entire surface of the planet into glass. But Din is convinced that the mines still exist and the waters remain. And that was why he decided to go to Nevarro, the planet that started it all in the series.

Is Anakin Skywalker in the Mandalorian Season 3? Here’s What We Know

Din met with Greef Karga in Nevarro, which became a prosperous planet under the leadership of the new magistrate and with the absence of the remnants of the Empire. The reason why Din returned to this planet was so that he could get back IG-11, the bounty hunter droid that we met in the very first episode of the series but was reprogrammed into a passive and cooperative droid that sacrificed itself back in the events of season 1 to make sure that Din Djarin and Grogu could escape the forces of Moff Gideon.

While Djarin didn’t trust droids, IG-11 was one droid he could trust his life to because it was responsible for saving him and Grogu. As such, he decided to try to bring the droid back to life by using the salvaged parts that Greef could find and turning it into a statue. However, Din was unsuccessful in returning the droid to its friendly self.

That was when Greef told him to meet up with the Anzellans, who he was convinced to go to Nevarro and stay there. Greef believes that the Anzellans could help the Mandalorian in his quest to bring IG-11 back to life and its old self. So, who are the Anzellans in The Mandalorian?

The Anzellans are small humanoid creatures that are incredibly tiny and smaller than Grogu. These creatures, despite being as small as they are, actually excel in fixing droids, as Greef even said that there are no better droid experts in the galaxy that are better than the Anzellans.

As such, the Anzellans, despite their small sizes, are likely to have powerful brains that allow them to specialize in fixing droids. Of course, their small hands are quite precise and can help them do things human hands cannot do when fixing droids.

Is Babu Frik in The Mandalorian?

To those not too deep into the Star Wars ecosystem, the Anzellans are new races. But the thing is that this isn’t the first time that an Anzellan was shown in the Star Wars storyline, and that’s because we saw one during the events of Star Wars Episode XI: The Rise of Skywalker.

In that movie, which takes place nearly three decades after the events of The Mandalorian, Rey, and the others go to a distant planet to find a way to access C-3PO’s memory so that they can use his knowledge of the Sith language to decipher the location of Exegol, which is located in the unknown regions of the universe. And the person that helped them was Babu Frik.

Babu Frik immediately became a fan-favorite character due to being so tiny yet incredibly entertaining. The way he talked was also quite entertaining as he spoke in broken English but could still relay his message to Rey and her allies. And Babu could access C-3PO’s restricted memory files without sacrificing the rest of the droid’s memories.

Of course, the leader of the Anzellans that we saw in The Mandalorian resembled the famous Babu Frik. They have the same size, beard, outfit, grumpy behavior, and broken English. However, there was never any mention of this Anzellan’s name during the events of the episode. That means that we can neither confirm nor deny whether or not this tiny guy was indeed Babu Frik.

Still, Lucasfilm is known for the many different easter eggs and cameo appearances in The Mandalorian, as this series has featured many characters in previous Star Wars movies. As such, featuring a character that became popular in the sequel trilogy shouldn’t be too surprising a move for The Mandalorian to make, as we’ve seen many different cameo appearances in this storyline already. That means there is good reason to believe that the Anzellan in that episode was Babu Frik.
