One of the things that we knew back in Star Wars: Clone Wars was the fact that there was a Wookiee Jedi youngling in the form of Gungi, who worked on becoming a Jedi Padawan together with other younglings. Of course, we didn’t see his fate during the events of Order 66, but he was confirmed to be alive when the trailer of The Bad Batch season 2 showed him as one of the characters that would be returning to the Star Wars lore. Then again, we all know about how the Jedi dwindled down in numbers until Luke Skywalker was the only true Jedi left (Ahsoka left the order). So, does that mean that Gungi is going to die in The Bad Batch season 2?

It is likely that Gungi is going to die in the events of The Bad Batch season 2. We know that the Wookiees were treated badly during the Empire’s time, and Gungi might fight on the side of his people in Kashyyyk, where he might meet a noble death. After all, he has to die because there should only be a few Jedi left.

While it might be true that Gungi was a favorite among fans the moment he was introduced, the fact is that he has to die because the entire plot requires his death, considering that only Luke (and a few others) should still be alive sometime in the future. And Gungi’s death should come in The Bad Batch so that Lucasfilm would not have to reintroduce him and kill him off in a future Star Wars series.

Why Gungi Could Die In The Bad Batch Season 2

We know that there were still a lot of Jedi left during the events of Star Wars: Clone Wars due to the fact that the Jedi Order was still intact. As such, we saw that there were younglings that were being groomed to become Jedi Padawan. One such Jedi youngling that we met was actually a Wookiee, as his introduction surprised a lot of fans because there aren’t even a lot of Wookiees in the Star Wars lore.

Nevertheless, this Wookiee, who was named Gungi, quickly became a favorite among fans when he was introduced because of his uniqueness as a Force-sensitive Wookiee that was working to become a true Jedi Knight. Gungi was introduced together with a few other Jedi younglings that worked together with Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano to become true Padawans. And they even fought on the side of the Republic on one mission before they were sent to work with other Jedi Knights in different places throughout the galaxy.

The fact that Gungi became a Padawan during the Clone Wars is the reason why he survived Order 66, as he was no longer in the Jedi Temple during that time. Of course, we don’t know the exact details of how he survived Order 66, but what we do know is that he survived that event because he was shown in the trailer of Star Wars: The Bad Batch season 2.

Despite the fact that Gungi is set to return to the Star Wars lore in The Bad Batch season 2, there is a good reason to believe that this will be his last appearance. Yes, there is a good chance that Gungi could die in the events of The Bad Batch season 2, and there is a good reason for that.

We know that there were only a few Jedi left by the time Luke Skywalker started training. While there were no true Jedi Knights at that time, we do know that Ahsoka, Grogu, and quite possibly Ezra were still alive during the time that Luke was working his way to becoming a Jedi. Years before that, there were still a few more Jedi left, but they were eventually killed by either Darth Vader or his Inquisitors.

In that regard, Gungi would have died sometime between the events of The Bad Batch and the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope because the Jedi should be nearly extinct when Luke started his journey as a Jedi.

We do know that there were Jedi that survived Order 66 but were killed off between then and the events of A New Hope. Gungi could be one of them, as there would be no better opportunity to kill him off than the events of The Bad Batch.

It is likely that Gungi will appear as a Wookiee Jedi aiding the Wookiees of Kashyyyk during the Imperial occupation of that planet. After all, a Wookiee Jedi would be most needed by his own people, and it is likely that he would be there on that planet to aid the Wookiees in their fight against the Empire. But in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, which takes place five years after Order 66, Gungi was nowhere to be found on Kashyyyk, as it is likely that he had already died before that.

Is Gungi Going To Die In The Bad Batch?

As mentioned, there is a good chance that Gungi could find himself working with the Wookiee resistance on Kashyyyk because that is where he is needed the most. It is possible that he would end up meeting the members of Clone Force 99 if the bad batch were to be sent there for a mercenary mission that requires their expertise. And Gungi might see his end while he is working together with Clone Force 99.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch: Who Is Captain Wilco?

A heroic end should be the best way for Gungi to go down in The Bad Batch because this would allow the members of the bad batch, who were more resistant to the effects of Order 66 due to their modifications and mutations, to rekindle their faith and belief in the Jedi, whose reputation was already tarnished due to the false information released by Emperor Palpatine.

Of course, there’s also the fact that Gungi dying means that Lucasfilm would no longer have to reintroduce him sometime in the future and then kill him off. This would solve any problems regarding the Star Wars continuity while giving Gungi a defining heroic moment that would make himself and the Jedi look good for those whose faith in them may have been shaken.
