When The Curse of the Black Pearl premiered in 2003, the Pirates of the Caribbean immediately became a massive global hit for Disney. Led by the charismatic performances of Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, the series became a pillar of pop culture, and while the overall quality of the movies dropped by the time the fifth movie was released, the series is nevertheless a much-beloved franchise. Now, it has been seven years since the last movie in the series, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was released, and while we know that the franchise is not dead, Disney is currently working on rebooting it with a different set of actors.

Of course, Johnny Depp’s personal issues and the highly-publicized trial with Amber Heard saw him being blacklisted for a while, and while his situation has somewhat improved, the actor is still a very controversial name in Hollywood. In light of that, many fans have been wondering whether Depp has a future in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and Jerry Bruckheimer finally addressed this issue.

Back in March, when we reported about the series, Bruckheimer reported that Disney was looking into rebooting the franchise as a whole, revealing the following:

“It’s hard to tell. You don’t know, you really don’t know. You don’t know how they come together. You just don’t know. Because with Top Gun you have an actor who is iconic and brilliant. And how many movies he does before he does Top Gun, I can’t tell you. But we’re gonna reboot Pirates, so that is easier to put together because you don’t have to wait for certain actors.”

This doesn’t mean that they will delete the original movies, but they will start from scratch and focus on a new set of characters and stories, which means that the original movies will be part of the shared universe but won’t actually be in focus. This implies that Depp – if returning – wouldn’t be a major character anymore. But will he return in any capacity?

When asked by Entertainment Tonight about Depp’s potential return to the franchise, here is what Bruckheimer revealed:

If it was up to me, of course. I love having Depp… He’s a great actor and good friend… I’ve certainly spoken to him, but we’ll see what happens.

So, folks, there you have it! Bruckheimer wants Jack Sparrow back, and as it stands now, there is a possibility that Depp will be returning to one of his famous roles; if Disney approves it, of course… When could it happen? We don’t know, but if you keep following us, we promise that we will deliver all the news and updates to you as soon as they appear!
