The year 2022 will be full of MCU content as Thor: Love And Thunder is set to release after Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. While we do know that the fourth Thor movie will heavily feature Thor and will see the return of Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, one of the major stars of the Thor franchise may or may not make an appearance. So, will Loki be in Thor: Love And Thunder?
Tom Hiddleston Loki may not appear in Thor: Love And Thunder. However, it has already been confirmed that Matt Damon will appear as the actor version of Loki in the film. That means that we will be seeing another re-enactment of a scene that involved Loki with Damon playing the role of the Loki actor.
One of the funniest scenes we saw in Thor: Ragnarök was the re-enactment of Loki’s “death” in Thor: The Dark World, as Loki hired actors to play his and Thor’s role. The good news is that Thor 4 will once again feature a similar scene, especially with Taika Waititi directing the movie once again. And we’ll talk more about Loki and his appearance in Thor 4 in this article.
Is Loki In Thor 4?
One of the most popular characters in the history of the MCU is the Asgardian god of mischief named Loki, who was introduced back in the first Thor movie in 2011 and was the main antagonist of the first Avengers movie in 2012. Since then, he appeared in more movies that involved Thor, but he ended up seeing his MCU main timeline death in the opening scenes of Avengers: Infinity War.
However, due to the events of Avengers: Endgame, where the Avengers messed the timeline up, Loki returned as a variant. Then, in the events of the Loki series, he was apprehended by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), the body that oversees the sacred timeline, because this Loki was now a variant that could mess up the sacred timeline. As such, we know for a fact that a version of Loki is still alive somewhere.
Of course, the entire Thor movie franchise is still ongoing, especially with Thor: Love And Thunder premiering soon to become the first non-Avengers MCU film that is the fourth in its own film series. That means that Thor’s story isn’t over, as it will likely continue until the events of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
Thor: Love And Thunder will also see the return of Jane Foster, who Thor said broke up with him after the events of Thor: The Dark World. This will be Jane’s first appearance in an MCU film since 2013, as she was visibly absent in all of the movies that featured Thor after The Dark World. And considering that Jane will be returning, what does that mean for Loki, who is arguably just as important as Foster is in the Thor movie series?
The good news is that, yes, Loki will be returning to Thor: Love And Thunder in one form or another. However, there is a twist here, as the Loki that will be returning will not be the same Loki that we have come to love. And another twist is that this is not a Loki variant that we saw back in the Loki series.
Will Tom Hiddleston Return As Loki In Thor: Love And Thunder?
As mentioned, the Tom Hiddleston version of Loki is still alive due to the events of Endgame and the Loki series. But does that mean that Hiddleston will be returning as Loki in Thor: Love And Thunder?
We may have mentioned that Loki will not be returning in Thor 4. However, the bad news is that this won’t be the Loki that we grew to love as both a villain and an anti-hero. That’s because it is unlikely that Tom Hiddleston will be returning to the MCU main movies anytime soon.
In an interview, Tom Hiddleston said:
“We have explored about as much as we can about these two brothers. We talked about the Thor movies as a family saga, and the diametric opposition between Thor and Loki, and duality and antagonism, being a book that perhaps should remain closed for the moment.”
That means that, as of this moment, Tom Hiddleston returning to Thor 4 or any other MCU movie in the near future is still something that is quite bleak, considering that the story between Thor and Loki had already been closed. Thor had already come to terms with his brother’s death. Meanwhile, Loki is still dealing with the multiverse mess that he helped cause in the events of Loki after Sylvie killed He Who Remains.
Speaking of the Loki series, the ending of season 1 showed us how the sacred timeline branched off to different timelines to create different universes. This is probably the reason why the MCU now has a multiverse instead of just one universe. Meanwhile, Loki was teleported to a different universe, as he is set to deal with the incoming threat that He Who Remains described during the events of season 1.
In that regard, considering that Loki’s story in the Loki series is yet to see its end because he still is in the middle of a mess that he helped cause, we believe that he should first deal with his problems in his own series first before he gets a chance to make an appearance in any of the main timeline MCU films.
After all, it would be quite absurd for him to appear in Thor: Love And Thunder and then return to the events happening in Loki once season 2 of the series is released.
Will Matt Damon Return As Actor Loki In Thor: Love And Thunder?
While Tom Hiddleston won’t be returning as the god of mischief in Thor: Love And Thunder, Loki will still be returning as a different version. And the Loki we are talking about isn’t entirely Loki but is just an actor.
In the events of Thor: Ragnarök, Thor returned to Asgard to find his father Odin acting strange as he was watching a play that re-enacted the events of Thor: The Dark World. The truth was that this version of Odin was simply Loki, who took over his father’s identity as the ruler of Asgard after his apparent death in events of The Dark World.
Meanwhile, the play was re-enacting Loki’s “death,” as the Loki version of Odin was making the people see him as a hero instead of as a tragic figure. And the person playing the role of Loki here was Matt Damon.
Going back to Love And Thunder, it was confirmed that Matt Damon is going to return as the actor version of Loki in Thor 4 because he and Luke Hemsworth, who played the role of actor Thor in the re-enactment, will once again do a similar scene.
“I went down there to Australia to shoot, and I think they sussed out, ’cause paparazzi took pictures of us, so that they sussed out what we were doing,” he continued. “We were kind of reprising a cameo that Luke Hemsworth and I did in the last one.”
Matt Damon also went on to say that he didn’t know whether or not this was a secret because everyone already knew that it was going to happen when they saw him on the set of Thor: Love And Thunder. As such, Loki will be returning as actor Loki and not the real Loki.
